Id prefer to stay aligned with our biggest competitors the EU and continue with direct payments, trying to compete on a level playingfield without them would be impossible, shame on defra for what theyre doing to the English farmers just now!

You had better keep hoping that Barnet formula isn't readjusted to make it fairer to English taxpayers. Wee Crankie might not have such largesse if it were reduced!

There was a Westminster Hall Debate (or what ever it’s called) a week or so ago on ELMs. A number of the MPs taking part made mention of government policy to reduce the number of farmers, particularly small farms. It seems to be no secret in Westminster that we are to be culled, and this forms part of that plan.

Incidentally, nearly all those taking part seemed to be on our side, with the exception of the minister, Prentice, who seemed a little out of her depth.
This is exactly whats happening, anti farming vegans are getting into positions of power and its game over now, the EU was a safe haven for us all we were well protected by the french farmers and a general pro ag attitude which doesnt exist in westminster now

Entitlements which are leased-in don’t have to be surrendered, but if they’re not, it could mean your lump sum payment would be reduced.
So as a Tenant Farmer if i retire with 100HA of entitlement. I then terminate my tenancy, which requires me to hand back the entitlements to the landlord. What evidence am i required to provide to you and how much will i be paid?

I'm well aware of the historical facts, but I can't think of any precedent for government actively seeking the shrinking - rather than 'consolidation' - of it.

That's because there is no precedent. We are in an era we haven't experienced before; an era of corporate control. Because that is what, ultimately, this is all about. The control of the food chain by global corporations, facilitated by Government.

With whats going on to farmers down in england now independance doesnt seem so bad, basically they are robbing farmers of cash they used to get each year from the EU to protect the industry from the lows and risk that comes with growing food in a factory with no roof

A new entrant can claim BPS, but they would need to buy or lease BPS entitlements from other farmers rather than re-using the ones that have been surrendered in this scheme.
Will they though? With entitlements being decoupled from land occupancy do entitlements not simply become a no strings attached IOU from the government? If each 1ha entitlement is worth about £230 in BPS claims over that final 4 years to whoever holds it and can be claimed without the land occupancy condition, why would anyone sell or lease them for much less? Why would any new entrant wish to buy access to about £230 worth of BPS claims over 4 years for about £230? Actually come to think about it after decoupling what stops anyone, retiring or otherwise from offloading their entitlements in exchange for a lump sum? For those who can use the exit scheme the gov might pay a better rate than a private buyer looking to make a margin but the exit scheme has a cap and hoops to jump through... or am I missing something?

I think it exists on the back benches. As I said, all but the minister were very much on our side in that debate. It certainly doesn’t exist in cabinet though. As @delilah has intimated, they can’t wait to hand the food chain over to their corporate chums!

Isn’t the food chain controlled by corporates anyway? Tesco manager controls the tattie price.

I did wonder if they noticed in the local Tesco store when I packed up road side spud sales. I used to sell about 30 tonnes a year at about a third of the price of Tescos. Packed up because it looked like I wasn’t going push Tescos over the brink any time soon.🤣

Good afternoon all

Today we've published information about our lump sum exit scheme for farmers who wish to exit the industry.

The new Lump Sum Exit Scheme will support farmers in England who wish to leave the industry though a lump sum payment, allowing them to exit the sector in a managed way. We expect farmers will be able to apply from April to the end of September 2022.

To be clear, this is not intended to push anyone to leave – it’s for those who want to leave, where a lump sum payment might help them to do so in a managed way.

We’ve also confirmed that the Government intends to legislate to make clear that lump sums paid out under the scheme will be treated as capital for tax purposes.

The news release is here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/...upport-farmers-who-wish-to-leave-the-industry

The Government response following our consultation about the scheme last year is here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consu...rs-lump-sum-exit-scheme-and-delinked-payments

Details of the scheme can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...-or-retire-from-farming-and-delinked-payments

Happy to answer any questions about the policy - the RPA are standing ready to answer any specific questions about your individual circumstances and eligibility on their normal helplines:

A global food shortage will see the end of the politicians and civil servants responsible for the whole ELMS, SFI fiasco.
Remember the Arab spring, all brought about because of the price of food. Janet Hughes and her mates will be the successors of the War ag making the RSPB, Wildlife trusts and N T farm to feed the starving masses or hand the ground they have neglected over.
