Hi TFF members,

We at TFF Towers are often making improvements adding features, upgrading plugins, managing servers and we thought it might be good to start a thread where we post about what's changed.

Hopefully you'll find it useful/interesting, especially when it's about new features.

Today we worked on the classifieds system ( http://classifieds.thefarmingforum.co.uk )
  1. Added members pictures to the classifieds view listing page.
  2. Increased the number of listings displayed per page from 9 to 20.
  3. Added functionality to remember user preferences. The classifieds will now always remember what your last filter was, meaning if you never want to see dealer adverts you don't have to.
  4. Removed the ability to delete listings this was causing problems/confusion due to the integration with the forum. Made editing a listing more obvious.
  5. Added functionality which automatically scrolls user back to the top of the listings when the page is changed
  6. Added a new "awaiting photo" for the listing page.
  7. Added the ability to reply directly to the linked forum thread from within the classifieds system.
  8. Added the ability to mark a listing as sold
  9. Fixed "contact seller" button throwing an error when contacting a dealer
  10. Changed the pricing on classifieds, decimal places are no longer supported and a price of 0 is no longer allowed.

These posts won't be everyday, but please let me know if you find them interesting, or have any feedback, questions or indeed bug reports :)

Another round of updates to classifieds today and some maintenance work on the forum

Classifieds:
  • Removed descriptions from appearing on search screen on small screen devices
  • Added contact options as step when creating a listing you can now optionally enter your mobile/email
  • Added the ability to see more information about a listing by clicking the thumbnail on the search screen
  • Added functionality to auto-rotate the images when they're uploaded ( more image tweaks to come... )
  • Added "ex demonstration" to new/used drop down list
Also don't forget to update your avatar on the forum from the default man if listing on the classifieds, it makes your listing stand out just that little bit more :)

Forum:

A security vulnerability is being disclosed on the 10'th of this month, as such we needed to rebuild one of our database servers before this date to make sure TFF stays nice and secure. Hopefully no one noticed anything whilst we did this :)

We also took this opportunity to upgrade some other software packages to the latest versions ( very similar to a windows update ;) ) and improved the backup strategy for the forum.

It does make a difference to a listing as you say, compared to one without their own avatar

Today we :)

Forum
  • Changed which database server acts as the "master" server :)

Classifieds
  • Added quick links to social media sites - facebook, twitter etc
  • Added location to the listing view page
  • Made the listing view page a little prettier
  • Made the post that automatically gets created for private listings prettier ( feel free to update your listing to reflect the changes )
  • Fixed a bug which were causing images to look horribly stretched when they went full size thanks @Stoosh, @fergie35 and a few others who I'm sure mentioned it to be but I can't find the threads to give thanks
  • Fixed reply box not rendering correctly on all devices/browsers
  • Fixed pause/unpause functionality not working
And that's about it for today :) As always any bug reports / suggestions please let us know!

Small round of updates today, mostly on classifieds

  • We added a "dealer reference" option for dealers, which will hopefully make it easier for dealers to manage their listings. Remember people who don't want to see dealers, there's an option to prevent seeing dealer listings and this is now "sticky"
  • Added some (hopefully) un-obnoxious adverts to the classifieds system, feedback welcomed.

;) The reason I didn't is because I thought I'd update it enough that it wouldn't be needed.... c'est la vie!

So improvements since last time I wrote this:

Forum
  • Top button is now back in conversation view
  • Improved website/database stability, we now have a single click "change database server" button to prevent database downtime
  • Improved logging of slow database queries
  • Fixed security issue caused when servers were rebuilt ( this issue was never exploited, it was found by me and fixed very quickly )
  • Upgraded to Xenforo 1.4.5
  • Upgraded plugins to latest versions for 1.4.5 upgrade
  • Added the ability to create a sponsored threads (http://thefarmingforum.co.uk/index.php?threads/tff-santander-support.58372/)
  • Renamed "classifieds" forum section to "Trading and classifieds"
  • Moved Quote me section to "Trading and classifieds" section
  • Created a Haulage and Backloads section in "Trading and classifieds"
Classifieds
  • Added "Quote Haulage" and "Quote Finance" buttons for listings. Filling in these forms will send an email our to haulage/finance companies who will then provide a quote
  • Added ability to create dealer pages ( you can see an example here http://classifieds.thefarmingforum.co.uk/dealer/Agri-Linc-1 )
  • Added a reset button on the main index page to clear all the current filters
  • Fixed "contact us" page on classifieds section
  • Added a year of manufacture to create listings screen
  • Improved stability of image upload functionality
  • Fixed various small design issues ( adverts overlapping listings on mobile devices )

I'll endeavour to keep this up to date a bit more regularly..... ;)

Since last time we:

Classifieds:
  • Changed the format of images on classifieds so they keep the same quality, but are greatly reduced in file size. This should make the classifieds system feel a lot faster especially for those on mobile connections
  • Fixed logging... and then fixed two bugs found by having logging ;)

A couple of updates to the forum today:

There's now an extra option in the search box to use "Google custom search" this will use Google's search engine to hopefully return more accurate results than Xenforo gives out of the box. You can also sort by "relevance and date". Feedback on this new feature would be really appreciated. The few people who requested this were @milkloss @Robigus @General-Lee and anybody else who reported it who I've missed.

I've also finally fixed the single search icon not working on tablets / mobiles. This *should* work swimmingly now too! @Lofty1984

Few more improvements today mainly to classifieds:
  • Lots of tweaks to make classifieds easier to search/creating listings on mobile devices
  • Added a "similar listings" feature when viewing a single listing ( this works just on category )
  • A few other minor bug fixes/tweaks

I've had similar missed out on threads as if/like I'd ignored the alert (iyswim). And is not until you go through new posts or watched threads you find it.

Any developments on alert notifications @admin that we used to get on the app, or is it done and dusted?

Alerts work fine with the Tapatalk app, but the re-skinned TFF app which is based on an old version of Tapatalk has been broken, alerts wise, for ages. Probably close to a year now....

Edit: actually alerts not worked on the TFF iPhone app since Sept '14.

Today's improvements:

We changed "Stay logged in" to default to true for users. We get a lot of queries from users which are directly related to them being logged out over time and so are trialling whether this reduces the amount of queries we get of this ilk.
