so thinking out loud, wheat is just a variety of grass ( ish)
Why can't we bread a plant that will regrow after harvest similar to grass?

Yes, but could it happen, talking science not politics. Think of it, no establishment costs other than fert.
Is it scientifically possible

Lots of things are possible, but will only happen if someone invests the money in making it happen. And if there's no money to be made once you've created the new whatever, who is going to bother? Its perfectly possible to make cars that last a lifetime, and all the major components are easily replaced. But we still have to buy a new one every decade or so. No commercial entity is going to invent itself out of existence, not on purpose anyway.

Anyway, whats the point? Crop prices not low enough for you already? Just think how low the price of grain would be if everyone had far lower growing costs. Remember, farmers never capture any productivity gains in increased profits - they all get passed on to the consumers and the middle men.

Even better, perennial wheat that fixes its own N.
There are perennial wheats being developed, google p-wheat at michigan state university. Very interesting project which involves hybrids of wheat and perennial grasses.

'tis called grass. I hear it's more profitable than wheat too.

It will happen, that we get perennial wheat, but you can bet that you will have to pay an "annual intellectual property license" to use it for the 2nd year.

Yawn,yawn, yawn :sleep::sleep::sleep:
Its a fact, new technology leads to higher rents in dog eat dog farming world.
drainage was the first new technology and farmers seldom benefit.
Just look at roundup, a great idea it seemed, but has allowed cereals to be overproduced constantly globally and put family farmers to the wall.
Sooner its banned the better.

I was commenting on what I quoted, nothing else :), you constantly show your hatred of landlords, after a while it just gets annoying. Have you ever thought that the reason landowners don't let land is because the thought of getting someone like you for a tenant fills them with dread:eek:.

This thread shows why farmers will always be poor. Give them a chance to grow two ears of wheat where one used to be, and they'll grab it with both hands, completely mindless of the effect it will have on prices and their long term profits. The dairy industry is playing that story out right now, in case no-one's noticed. If any farmer thinks that having a nitrogen fixing perennial wheat plant is going to make them rich they need their head examining. The only ones to gain would be whoever owned the patent, and thats not going to be Joe Farmer.

Yes perennial wheat could happen but not at an economic yield yet, things may have moved on since I was at college, annual wheat yields certainly haven't.
