Air Fed Welding Mask Opinions

We've got 14 galvanised feed barriers that need all of the bars on them moved due to a design flaw (Last slot is too narrow, cows get their heads stuck).

Anyway, I'm quite concerned about the fumes from grinding and welding the barriers now that they've been galvanised. I've spoken to our local welding supplier who said that if it was a one off small job, do it outside on a windy day. However, given that it's a fairly big job which will be done inside a small workshop, they recommend an air-fed mask.

Much as I like my current speedglas 100 series mask, a 9100 series with Adflo doesn't seem justifiable in this case. The other option offered by our supplier is a 'Navitek Red Side Vision S4'. Price seems very reasonable but I would welcome people's opinion on that system.

I've got one its great as long as your not moving around too much it is a bit heavy
It will probably only be used for this job and then spend most of its life in a box so if it's a bit too heavy or uncomfortable I'll just have to put up with it. Even though it's considerably cheaper, surely it must be made to the same British standards for safety.

what ever you do get something fixed up - after several years of welding on paint, zinc coat etc- i get to cough and wheeze if i weld anything 'dirty' now.

Have you an Aquavac or similar, biggish vacuum? then modify the nozzle to suit length of weld. The fume is very dangerous, but the cost of a fume mask would make it an expensive job. All you need to do is ensure the fume is removed from the air you are likely to breath. Also "Martindale" used to make some special filters for their masks.

If your only doing it for a short while its not a problem ,just dont let the fumes go under your mask, the heat makes the fumes rise fast. If your doing a lot you need a helmet with an internal shroud that makes it airtightish with a air filter that hangs from a belt behind you (not cheap) cyanide is the biggest problem so best to just avoid fumes. Common sense :)

Buy a second hand speed glass one. Your totally right to be concerned about the fumes there not nice and doesn't take much grinding or welding to make you I'll. Thers been a few times I have thought I was dying after welding galvanised steel without proper ventilation or mask
