To dave grohl, tell me how does science know what cows think, please cut some newspaper into thin strips, tie these onto gates or fences and watch your animals eating them, tell me how you get on, or ask the cows why they do it ? The three cows guy.
A cynic might ask how you know what cows think

They're inquisitive. Just like scientists. Why do they try to eat my jacket? Is there something in the cloth that they're after? (Not the scientists!)

I don't think he is, used to know a chap 40 years ago reared bulls exactly as thethreecowguy describes, every bull walked 2 miles on council roads, used to take them to perth to sell. All you read on here is how pedigree bulls don't last, are over fat when sold, and have bad feet, perhaps in their keenness to avoid too much physical work, the bull breeders have lost the art of presenting a bull for sale, the bulls were kept in concrete floored pens with a small bedded area at the back, and did road work every day. I think this is one chap who does know what he's talking about.
Pedigree beef Bulls get fed 25 kgs of concentrate a day! Utterly ridiculous and totally disconnected from the commercial reality!

Answer to Bovine, Careful here you could be short of both plastic and the ink go ask for help quick, regards the newspaper, seriously all stock farmers should know this one, because the answer is in most soils, take a little time to think positively, dont worry your cattle wont eat enough to harm them, but if they do your soil is in a bad way, I tell you. Regards the calves chewing on string that we discussed last week, iv'e yet had no serious responses, hope you are not all too busy Christmas shopping as that does your stock animals no good at all. The three Cow guy.

Just loading the feeder wagon, put lots of water in then add the pens but only chop for short time as they need the roughage, then add the thistles alone with string and the to top it off bugger the molasses put ink as well o yea and a coat for good measure, Il stop dealing with forfarmers now and only deal with my local stationary and clothes stores.

You adding newspaper? Or not bothering worth that super food?

It's not quite as big a load of rubbish as you think. Cows spend far too long on their feet, it's when they are laying down that they are making money

I agree 110% with this....and sure as hell diet plays a part in feet and i'm a great believer in long fibre even at the expense of losing a bit of milk. On a healthy diet they will more likely stay healthy in more ways than just her feet.
cows haven't evolved over millions of years to be fed something that can be run through a sieve or chopped/mulched into 20mm pieces.

Id agree with the long fibre too.

Ive been offering straw at milking time for the last couple of years and its reduced lameness. If they are grazing stemmy grass they wont touch it but if on lush soft grass they eat lots of it.

The problem horse people get with hay proteins is that too much artifical fertilizers are used to produce more hay, these fertilizers induce faster growth and too much protein, but they dont improve the quality of your soils , sorry to say we should all carry out a humus content test on all our soils, no good flogging weak soils. This test cost nothing but a little time, and you dont spend any cash while you are doing it,soils are honest, so do a test and let me know what percentage of humus you have in your grassland soils, this will also help with those gammy feet on your cows. The three cow guy

thanks to MF240, and multy power for a little bit of sense, and also to Happy cows, he is on to the correct facts, for a good profit you must reduce unnecesary costs like treating bad feet,if you got to buy straw you are also buying some one elses fertility, some one tell me please how much Lime is available in four large bales of straw?, the paper strips, well seriously I got some banter here, but no one seems to know why cattle like to eat this material. Slow down and I would say you take some time to listen to @thethreecowguy . He is very correct on where he is coming from.

I would certainly be interested in hearing him as a speaker at a discussion group.

Modern farming has ruined the soil over the last 50 years and shot it's self in the foot very badly - The impact of that is slowly being seen in a million different ways in all directions.

I pull my hair out seeing how useless we all are as farmers! - the job we are trying to do really is rocket science.

Thank you very much to New holland for your kind comments, lets have a few chats if you have a problem i n future, I have only recently started chatting, I throw an idea in here and there, got some abuse that tells me that you farmers are all trying to do too much in too short a time, I told you why calves chew string because they(your calf) know that Selenium is essential for them, they do this because, you who know it all, are keeping them short of it in their diet, as for the Newspaper strips, there is a deep silence, nobody has suggested why this is a fact, but it is I promise you, I have plenty of time to waste at my age,so I am hoping to here from you soon, before you spend all your money on newspapers, but please god don't rush! The Three Cow guy.
