Vaderstad Strip Till Drill

Had a demo yesterday. Drilling Spring Barley @170kg/ha into sprayed off thin cover crop of Oats (which was drilled in October at only 40kg/ha)
Placing 350kg/ha 6-6-17 (elemental figures). I hope the dying Oats wont hinder the barley, parts of field under water up to 2 weeks ago so did not get it killed off as early as planned.

200hp on 4 metre drill with front legs 4-5 inch deep. Managed OK but 7 mph was the limit.

Nice finish after the roller. Notice the bald area in this picture, was waterlogged most of winter hence the cover died but now the soil is much drier than the rest of field. Hopefully this might carry through if we get a dry spring from here on in.

Will be interested to hear how you get on with the oats not have been sprayed off long. Please post to let us know.

Yea bit of a worry but they look thicker in the picture than they were, there is approx 21kgN/ha placed and another 35kgN/ha broadcast in front of drill so hopefully it will help get the barley away quick. If it was no-till I doubt id have drilled yet and let the Oats die a bit more but the bit off tilling should help reduce any alleopathetic effect? Hopefully!!!!!!!!

If only Vaderstad would make a version that you could swap the legs for system discs I'd have one straight away.
I agree, the rapid lift looks a good concept but is massive and maybe might cause some structural issue long term :scratchhead: but it does look effective.
The system disc on a rapid is easy enough to change over for a shallow strip till unit I think, it was something I had considered making with the help of an engineering friend.
I had been told that Germany was driving the strip till market and the spirit is the bigger seller for Vad there which is why the development has not been on the rapid.
I would love to dd rape and then swap back to discs to drill cereals, but don't want to go down the road of the monstrous rapid lift !!

A colleague of mine in Hertfordshire bought a Rapidlift for his new RDA600. Very impressive establishment from the osr he did with it but it brought his Cat 765 to its knees at 6 inches deep on clay.

The Rapidlift comes with an integral drawbar to take the extra hp needed so there isn't much stress on the Rapid itself unless you tried turning with it in the ground. It does add nearly 2m to the length of the drill so headland turns need to be bigger. You don't have to remove the tine toolbar to drill without but you do have the extra turning circle.

The advantage over a Spirit with a tine toolbar on the front is that the system disc can work the lumps down before the coulters but you don't have the consolidation of the Spirit's middle tyre packer.

Funny, I have heard from a couple of sources that some rapidlifts have gone back for welding on the main drill frames due to the stresses the rapid lift puts on to the drill !
I don't know if I would want to lug about the extra weight of it when drilling cereals if it's not in use either, I can't remember off the top of my head. but the 6m one weighs a couple of tons maybe ?
The concept seems to be effective but it seems very cumbersome and heavy imo.

What is the reason for using oats in this situation ? would winter barley not achieve the same result ?

The plan was for this field to be drilled with Beans but the field was waterlogged in places when I was drilling beans mid march so drilled a different field and changed cropping plans a bit. There was plenty of barley vols in the field last oct that would have made an acceptible cover but also lots of groundsil coming into flower which would have set seed and there is no reliable herbicide for groundsil in beans. Also killed a flush of Broome by qlyphosate in Autumn. Also have often used oats as a cover pre spring break crops as they are not affected by take all and it gives a longer take all break from cereals which will follow next sept.
