Not ag I know but in my business if the customer is unknown to us then we insist on pro forma as I am not going to end up with a large (or small) debt that I then strugle to get paid. With trailers you should have to pay a % up front if it is a special build but for run of the mill trailers then you should pay when it ready to leave their yard.
For those that don't think they should pay up front you don't have to look too hard to find threads on here about how difficult it is getting money out of some farmers once the job is done.
Other industries do use pro forma invoicing, we have an order that will be processed next month for close on £45k it will not leave us until the invoice has been paid in full.

When I see it in my yard.
The way it should be done is , deposit on order . Full payment before delivery . I have heard all those " can we pay the driver" types before . Then the driver brings no cheque or post dated cheque back . Must say 95% of folk ok but you do get an element that spoil it for the rest

I take your point. Its not a easy one to arrange satisfactorily. I suppose it comes back to the use of dealer vs potential lower price etc. for paying in advance. I suppose you could pay when its been made before delivery etc. Its not totally clear cut

would that make any difference ? . imo it will only slow the job down
how ever the last payments made you don't pay all upfront

I didn't pay all up front. I paid 25%, which I didn't think unreasonable. Then the balance when they told me it was ready, which was back in May.

For another, rather niche machine, last week I paid 100% upfront. However I know the man quite well and have been using his machines for years.

One Staines trailer with hydraulic sides!
Not 100% as specified but it'll do.

I hope to start a thread later today on how good it is.
