Now there's something you don't see much nowadays! The old Vicon side rake. Never understood why they didn't redesign them with a hydraulic ram to lift the wheels out of work at the end of the row. They always made a clean job of rowing up, but the inability to turn cleanly on the headland meant that the haybob was always going to take over.

Yes we use it most years in a light cut to make a decent row for the baler. Rowed that up with the haybob then put 2 into 1 with the side rake. Have wondered about putting a fixed drawbar and a trailer axle behind with a ram to lift it out as we have to row the headlands up first, bale them, then row the middle up. on the other hand i'd rather have a twin rotor rake!

does it not rope the hay all together?

I've only baled any real amount with a little baler, but from what I can see that is not such a bad thing...

With the baler going at a good forward speed, and in good condition to be able to take it, it does not really matter.

Roping together was mainly a problem with silage, precision chops etc, where a roped up swath would pull all in on one go, killing the tractor and making the job generally hard going...

Just my opinion... :)

I use a V rake (effectively two side rakes in mirror image forming a V) to row up all my hay, never had a problem with roping. Might be an issue in damper crops (ie silage/haylage) but in hay not a problem, even in heavy crops - this season some fields have been running at 125 small bales/acre, and the V rake has coped without a hitch.

That only happened with these type of rakes if the hay was turned a dozen times with the thing to wind it into a rope. If your only rowing up once or putting 2 into 1 its no problem. Its not a good machine for Haylage, as the tines run on the ground and can pull soil into the crop. Not good for fermentation. Already got the badge.:(

I was going to get some photos of my neighbour silaging but he got contractors in, he usually uses i think a 590 and drum mower, 175 and kuhn rake, a 290 on a nh 716???? forager, 135 leading with barn door type trailers and a fermec on the pit. All tidy kit.
