Manhole cover..

Stuck manhole cover. Its a 2ft round iron cover... it is firmly stuck. Tried.. sledge hammer, jemmy bar, chain on pallet forks on keys and sledge hammer with jemmy bar... so beginning to think it is welded by age/ rust. So what is the solution do you think.. heat? cut it out? Cant dig the whole thing out as it is on a cow yard.. if i do wreck it to get it out where to find a replacement? thanks...

As others have said, vibrate it well while pulling upwith fork truck. I think it will be a good idea to power wash round it to get as much crap out as poss. like Mydexta says.

Thankyou all... you are all correct..brilliant advice Except perhaps for hestondriver....!:)

The manhole cover has been removed.. intact!!(y) Tools used.... Manitou, propane oxy set, sledge hammer, old silage fork tine, bucket, cold water, pressure washer, jack hammer , hduty keys, chain.. 18 stone man.

Used pwasher to clean around the edge.. did some good but mostly soaked my legs, then set to with the oxy set, heated the rim and bashed the edges with sledge, cooled with water, keys in, chain on lifted until chain was humming tight and tyres on manitou squished by an inch. then got the breaker out and went round the edge twice..then into the middle..and up she popped. About 3 hrs work...

Drain cleared after alot of grunting and head down the hole removing stones, nails, leaves, a crocodile clip:confused: and substantial other gubbins.. so thankyou for enabling me to enjoy that rare treat!

Allow my two learned colleagues to demonstrate :

@milkloss - the entrepreneur in me sees a gap in the market, how do you feel about a partnership in 'drain cover removal experts' ?

Could be a gas - if you pardon the pun- did make my own burrow blaster once, even made an ignition box with a 555 timer and coil! those were the days.

Where could I get a decent chunk of carbide from? Would save dragging the bottles about.

I am lost for words... that stuff looks awesome! I understand from my wife who's brother and father used carbide in their caving lamps.. how does it work.. is that water they are adding to the carbide? I suspect that even the carbide would have failed to lift the cover but it certainly would have cleaned a couple of the less blocked drain pipes out.. hestondriver .. i thank you for that education..:)

calcium carbide when mixed with water releases acetylene gas .
carbid lamps work buy adding the water to the stone to releasethe gas , this is then regulated and burned .
I think this is the same principle behind the old gas guns
every day is a school day . im probably going to have interpol knocking on my bedroom door in the middle of the night after posting this stuff !

An old boss of mines best friend burst his eardrum (and a couple of other friends and all the windows in a car) when the acetylene balloon they were carrying err ignited whilst driving down a road...
