Tarmacing silo clamp floor

Asphalt (ash felt) is meant to be a great job and doesn't get eaten away like concrete, seen it in Denmark at an AD plant but have not seen it used in the UK. We built new pits this year and used 40nm concrete, its completely eaten away to shite after a few months of effluent on it. Really not impressed. Considering asphalt the next time round depending on cost.

Would not think regular tarmac would stand up to machinery?

3 of our outdoor pits have been done with asphalt over concrete, the concrete didnt last very well and was crumbling on the top so they were covered with asphalt about 8 years ago and been no problems, the next 3 pits were concreted but a different mix and seem to be lasting ok, oldest of these is 6 years old.

The silage pit that dad built/dug in 1989 has a tar floor and it is still going pretty strong. It has worn out at the front where there is the most traffic is. 4 years ago we dug that out and put concrete down (40x40 feet) and this is not wearing out as well as the tar.

nearly certain harper adams put tarmac on their silo floors when they last replaced their silos -couldn't be any worse than what they were putting up with before

Hot rolled ashphalt works well but must be cleaned out the day the silo is empty - cattle sh1t does eat it if let in. also comments about tines digging holes correct just need to be careful. I know a guy who used to advice on this sort of thing and can get more details if needed.

concrete should wear reasonably well if the right strength and laid correctly to drain. also must cure completely before silage put in or put a polythene sheet over floor to protect it in the first year

Hi Maxuum,

Please get in touch again and I can see if we can help.

We have struggled in the past with meeting demand - we are more on the ball now.

I have also got info on HRA (asphalt) for silage pits.
