I don't think you are far off with the prices you think, there is an abundance of straw in this area, and stuff that was baled and stored away isn't really shifting just yet.

Winter wheat £45-£50
Spring wheat £38
Spring barley £45

Central Midlands. All private sales.

Last minute sale of wheat following a rotation change £20/tonne which worked out at £35/ac iirc.

Auctioned wheat was £30/acre in some sales but much of the stuff put it had reserves so didn't sell.

Ive bought more in recent years in the swath, but paid by the bale. Crops can vary from 1.5 120*70 quadrants to 6 bales to the acre. By the bale is fair, less crop, cheaper/ac for me (more expensive to bale though) Big crop, farmer gets more £. Simple, just needs trust and honesty.

Never buy in the swath but bale contractors have taken one hell of a knock a lot have and still are losing money on the job this year so don't be to hard on them
Think you will see a new world next year straw will be dearer and a lot less baled but who knows, quality has got to improve that's for sure, with haulage costing what it does and merchants now having to wind their trailers in no one wants to see poorly baled and stored product so if you can't do the job right please leave it alone

I had to settle for £65 barley , £53 wheat/acre this year, which was down on the previous year, when I got £90 for winter barley and £70 for wheat .
A lot of mine goes in a straw for muck swap now, and might not have any to sell this year.
Did wonder about buying some in and filling the barn now.

It's cheap enough if people are willing to sell. Seems to be a lot of supply and little demand from what I've heard. Is that still the case?
I'm thinking i could possibly buy in straw now, that would work out cheaper than if i'd kept my own and baled and carted it.

You don't go to the pub and buy a glass of beer , you buy a pint because you know what your getting surely ?
Buy fert buy the tonne, sell spuds by the tonne so why trade straw by the acre....madness!

FS
the best way to sell straw would be a weigh bridge in every field… but that's not really possible.
