Coccidiosis in Lambs

If Baycox has a 'residual effect's for 10days as you mentioned above... it will do the same as this other side is claiming.

It basically means the drug stars in the system for the 10days killing any new Cocci ingested. Basically culling the population.

Vecoxan only kills what's in the lamb, when it's dosed. But, the guidelines for Vecoxan say to do a follow up dose after 4 weeks if the Cocci burden on the land needs controlling.
would that make baycox cheaper or similar in cost only needing one dose?

Probably depends if u can get tolracol instead of baycox as tolracol is much cheaper than baycox. Dosages are the same as vecoxan so if u need two doses, tolracol works out cheaper. With the tolracol we used this year it would work out similar price to one dose of vecoxan.

Only depends on the levels of Cocci.
Iv never needed to do a follow up dose. Just 1 well timed does the job fine.

Unless you could somehow remove Cocci from your land, you will always need to dose for it... I'm still currently using the cheapest dose on the market.

Im not sure how cocci 'works' but we are told persistent wormers are bad for breeding resistance. My gut tells me a persistent cocci drug may also be bad if it's not needed.

Just got a FEC back from the vets and they said the Cocci count was 1600 is that high? never really had a problem with it before but there is the odd scouring store lamb. No nemo or strongyle present.
Vet said to dose just the scouring lambs with Tolracol ??

5 and a half years on @neilo we still don't know how Cocci "works" and we still have reservations about drug persistency and the potential resistance build up 👍 🤣

I think it depends if they are a pathological strain (most aren't).

If the lambs are scouring and losing condition, and you've ruled out worms, then it would most likely mean that's your issue. If they had never encountered cocci before then they will not have developed a natural resistance. If they are suddenly have a big challenge then it can be hit older lambs just the same as young ones.

If that's the case, then the sooner you do them the better.

Of course it might also be trace elements, or black heads causing the scouring and but presume you'be e ruled them out.

I've asked the vet to find out if its pathological or not currently don't have an answer...
Overall they look pretty good just the bottom 50 that are a bit dirty, still growing 100g/day on the worst looking cover crops so i guess i can't complain to much!
Never had to drench for cocci so bit of unsure territory for me......
