Morning all,

Has anyone had any issue with frit fly after a 1 year grass ley? Was looking to sow early-mid September but ideally would like to graze right up to that point.

We are in Scotland if the latitude makes any difference.

Yes. Ideally you want at least 3 weeks of no green plant before planting wheat to put the frit fly off. Cut & bale, then spray it off.

I don't know if Signal (cypermethrin) seed dressing helps at all.

We plough up 2 and 3 year grass leys and sow with wheat any time from mid September until November/December. Sheep are often taken off the field as we start ploughing and sowing. I cant remember having any issues with frit fly within the last 30 years although a neighbour had winter wheat this year after a 2 year ley that has had bare patches in it since not long after it came through the ground. They were told it was frit fly but it looked more like it had poor vigour.
