Yes, I know, big sin.
Laid a hedge 8 years ago and found some 30 year old big bale string from where it was laid before!
We do try and cut it out the next year, if the rabbits have not already chewed it, thats why we use the brightest string we can find.
To stake and bind properly would take 3 times as long, save that for our days out competing.

shame they can't mark, reassess the hedges again in view of how they grow later in the season, as after all, how the laid hedges grow is the most important thing rather than how they look on the day

Most hedging matches will have a prize for best regrowth, bit more luck of the draw involved imv, if you draw a bad piece and have to cut a lot out, then your not likely to win the best regrowth. I believe the national has a prize for best work in a poor piece also.
We try to run it as a training event primarily, working in pairs, with points at the end. I would rather have a lot of keen novices learning the basics than just a few turning up to win, so some wonāt have done it before, whereas others might be more experienced & quicker so we try get them working to a higher standard.

It would be great to score it now, but as it counts towards their County Rally points would need to be done by mid April which would be a bit too early.

Neither of us troubled the judges!
Competition was pretty tough , 15 in my section.
What is impressive is that the same people can turn it on whatever the hedge.
They had a major issue sorting supreme champion. 1/4 points in it

I like to do hedge laying in my local area. Some private work. But mostly for farmers on grants schemes. I would like to lay more hedges. I was thinking about volunteering to get more laying in! Any one with advice of doing hedges on a volunteering side. Thanks
If you join the hedge laying society they have ( or at least used to have) a list of contractors on their website. That might get you more work in your area?

Half way through, was quite tricky as had been laid before but the heels had not been cut off so new pleachers were 6 inches from the ground with dead wood onthe side they needed to bend. Really useful lesson!
