Slatted cattle shed

We are thinking about putting up a slatted shed. We would calve in March on straw, so was wondering what age would the calves need to be before putting the cows back on to slats with the calves having a bedded pen to creep into?

Also what would be the most efecient shed to build?

Thank you

We have our summer/ backend calvers all on slats. 50 odd outfits, like the calves to be strong when they go into the shed as the cows are at a high stocking density. Best thing to do is spend plenty time having a look at different sheds and pick what will fit your system best. Spent years designing ours and apart from making the creep area bigger I wouldnt change anything. Feel free to call in if your in south Northumberland anytime.

Calves are mostly July born but odd ones late august/ early September. So mainly 3 months when they go in, normally house around end of October. Most cows are bulled outside before they come in but bulls just run on the slats through the day then pen them up on straw at night.

If you calve in March I would be getting them out rather than put cows back onto slats. Not a comfortable environment for wee feet to go through slats or sook a mucky teat.

And find it's mother in a crowded pen, those are my concerns, just that there isn't any grass for them until May, and March or even April can be rough on young calves or cows that have been wintered inside.

When do you sell your calves? Drop calving back to end of April beginning of May, let cows out as they calve. They will be bulled out side on a good flush of grass. Calves will creep well off the slats in the backend. Shut the creep gates in the new year and sell the calves in March. You then have all the creep area to calve on. That is sort of our system just they calve in July and sell in May.

October after their second summer, would be willing to change that, but calving in March suits us. Gets it done before lambing in April and allows May for spring work. Calves are then big enough to take all the milk from the spring grass, and are old enough to split from cows in October although less need for that with a new shed.

Your system seems ideal

My cows and claves go back onto slats from 10 days. It is an issue and i do see the odd sore leg / joint. They learn quick though.

Would be ideal to have a transition shed so they are a month old as mentioned above - but I don't.

About 3 - 4 weeks old here. Only for a few weeks till turnout. Ground's often very wet here in the Spring, so needs must.
Not sure I'd consider it if the cows were going to be bulling though.

If it's only for a few weeks in the Spring, you don't need the expense of building a separate creep area, assuming you're able to thin the cows out a bit into other sheds at calving. Slats here are usually 1/4 empty before we need to move some back on so we just have some pens with creep gates between, and just bed an empty pen on top of the slats for the calves.

Beware the Farm assurance though. Last one we had came at the 'wrong' time and frowned heavily at the practice, although didn't actually say it was a non-compliance. There might be a minimum age for slats somewhere in the standards.

We’d normally have calves on slats with their mothers at around 3-4 days old with a straw creep for the calf’s. Just keep an eye out for a day or so that they are finding the creep & likewise finding their way out of creep. You’d find here in Orkney that to be fairly normal practice.

QMS standards says slats should be for the age of stock and cows should have access to a loafing area.
Save your slats for store cattle.
As far as weather is concerned we let all cows out in 1sr April with access to a cubicle shed. Makes a mess round the access but 40 will calves in 8 acres. They can stand a lot of wet weather

I thought that it was only a recommendation?
