We have had this problem a few times. When we used to graze we always had a problem during heatwaves when cows lay in the shade most of the time.
When It hit during the winter we did everything we could think of including killing cows, dried cows off for six months, listened to every expert we could find. Finally had a very plausible chap from genus who convinced us to try the full valiant regime of foam pre dipping and post dipping from a dipper. Within a fortnight the problem cleared but got fed up with the protocol and thought it cost too much, so stopped.
Problem gave back six weeks later!!!
Valiant is a great product. I swapped out the foam pre dip for a weak paracetic acid solution and saw no difference though.

our much reduced few, out on a dry bank, still marking it though, milk gone up though, as has cell count, wonder why...................

as soon as we work a bit of ground, dries like hell. Had planned to aerate a lot, case of too wet, then too much grass, can't win.

somewhere in the nettles, is an old steam chest, apparently you took all your clusters, and pipework, and presumably your 'buckets', and steam cleaned them. Was always told they came out as clean as clean can be, completely sterile.

No chemical used either, surely this must be the new way forward ? Ultra clean, with no chemicals.

all l can add, is thank goodness for chemicals.

the old cooler system, with an open container, milk running down a rippled 'thing', with cold water running through it, donated that to a museum several years ago, kept the last milking stool, cleaned up a treat !

around us, it is virtually impossible to find decent labour, to many big employers, chasing too few people, plenty of nice clean jobs as well.

our p/t is leaving :) been here to long anyway, breakages are escalating.
conversation this morning.
'did you hit the gate up the road'
'no'
'are you sure'
'yes'
'the one by the cottages'
'well, l might have'
'its buckled in half, you must have known/seen it'
'no'
'did you try and open it, with the front tyres, on the tractor'
m....................................................................
'well you must know'
'yes l did try'
'will you pay for a new gate then ?'
'yes'

accidents happen, things get broken, fully accept that. My policy is dead simple, tell us asap, then we can only have a little moan. Don't tell us, and we find it, that really annoys me, especially when we go to use something, and its broke.

am l being to harsh ? Reckon his breakages, in the last month, have exceeded his wages ! Son has only put up with him, because there isn't anyone else. He just loses interest, and slows right down into snail gear, and got to the stage where we have to check things have been done.

its not rocket science, this time of year, its feeding, scraping and bedding up, bedding up has dropped off the list, he can't push a round bale over now. Simple tractor work, not to bad, anything else, no. But when we have been to mkt/sale, and come back, to no him, and cattle not fed, 'he felt bad'.

rant over.
