    Hitting the grass 23

Same. 18 acres mown today, bale tomorrow. One field was 3500 but cows aren't going to eat it. Last platewalk growth was 87, i should imagine topped 100 over last couple of days, days ahead was 19 so needed to take some off.

Alternative ways to pay for forager.

Maybe ask any of your contractors tractor drivers if they would like to swap to working in a factory with one day off a month in China. In reality they don't have a bad deal and are reasonably well paid for what the job is. Most wouldn't do 80-100 hour weeks for most of the year. I do totally...

    Dairy startup

Context is everything. We do everything different from what you describe. Not got to the dizzy heights of 80 cows yet. We milk from 1st March to 20th December now, OAD from early September, no staff and partner still works on her parents farm 3 days a week. The last two points are good, you...

    All things Dairy

Couldn't get a baler to do the whole field between the rain, so pre mowed where the track is going in this field and got some imaginative fencing done. Probably a good job the middle picture is blurry as my mowing wasn't the best....

    Dairy startup

Definitely agree to look at Ireland for inspiration. I like that Teagasc remind me I'm not the only farmer in the world with less than 100 cows 🤣

    Cow tracks...again

Starting this at the weekend. Got most things worked out but two questions: Width of spur tracks, just for cows, off main track. On our numbers surely 4-5ft would do? Lay the stone for the spurs directly on the ground or remove topsoil first? And put a membrane down or not? I'm thinking one or...

    Good mower for topping

    Milking parlour mangers

Far from me but we sent one to a local fabricator and got him to make 10 copies. Isn't @Grassman247 Cheshire based and must have had someone do the fabrication work for his new parlour set up.

    Milking parlour mangers

Where are you based? We had some made up to match our old ones as our parlour couldn't fit any off the shelf ones.

    Maize 24

Not much better to get 'improvement in soil structure with varied rooting depths' than a dock.

To roll or not to roll?

We don't have Cambridge roll only flat. Think I'm going to leave it given the rain tomorrow.

To roll or not to roll?

    Fairly light and free draining

To roll or not to roll?

Fairly big lump of rain coming Monday. That's partly my hesitation, thought it might do more harm than good to roll

To roll or not to roll?

Put in 5 acres forage rape, plough, rolled, combi drill. Not a big job to roll it but is it worth it?

    All things Dairy

That looks like it will make some rocket fuel mind. Nice and green in the bottom.

CS CAPITAL GRANT APPROVAL BIG PROBLEM!

Is it due to what the track will be used for? We have a grant on 450m of track but it's used for cows walking to and from the parlour twice a day so the risk of erosion/runoff is relatively high. Would be between 50 and 200m from nearest river at various point on the track. I have to say we went...

    Water pump

The idea of buying all those water fittings, not sure i could do it. 🤣 Looks good though.

Can a housed cow system be "regenerative"?

It may not be the wrong answer but it is more complex and definitely the wrong calculation to just say higher litres over less cows equals lower carbon footprint. There is a ton of pseudoscience in this industry.

Can a housed cow system be "regenerative"?

    That is a drastic simplification.
