The kiwi tech micro troughs are brilliant, the cattle seem to prefer drinking from them instead of the big troughs. I’d avoid the fittings, long and short of it they don’t work, you’ll end up hating them!
I wouldn’t bother with rounds as inters if your going chestnut, use the cleft posts, higher percent of heartwood going to last longer. As to having no preservatives, chestnut contains more tanin than oak so it’s naturally rot resistant.
Oaks good for strainers + gateposts only if you strip the...
Dave if you ever want some chestnut give me a shout I’m only up the road. From what the fella that cuts for me says there is hundreds of acres in the SE but up until the banning of arsenic the one man band in the wood couldn’t compete with the huge softwood moguls / there wasn’t any need for it...
Hamptons have just launched their new posts and ArcelorMittal are due to launch theirs just after Christmas.
Havnt seen that much of either, but both are adjustable fixings so variable netting can be used.
From what I have seen, both look stronger than clipex, triangular sections and the...
Chestnut should be fine, we have just done a fair amount to this spec and they verified with natural england that chestnut was fine, posts just need to be 100mm+
depends on the ground etc, but the cost of installing the fence should be £2, people will say a little more than that i expect.
Taking down the old fence will probably be charged by the hour.
Personally Id go HT/8/80/22. Sheep wont get their heads stuck (the smaller stuff is 8/80/15) Get yourself tornado or some estate, I cant say much posistive about the other brands.
Timber wise its a minefield, if you want something to last get hold of fence and forget, not too far from you and...
Get yourself some nail plates Fendt. (other nails, gang nail plates or timber mending plates)
I use them on the chestnut strainers to stop them splitting out over time
Someone has hit a nail on the the head, its the quality of timber being treated not the treatment process that has a big effect on the longevity of the post.. Treat wet fast grown spruce with anything and its not going to last!
I should stake my claim, I use and supply Chestnut fencing and...
Ive found if you use a tension crimp (the v bit) as a reference point you can put the bend in the same place on every wire. I twist all 8 wires on one side, then thread the other side through and well past the loop, then twist all of that side up before pulling the knots back together.
People say its rough, but if put up correctly can look really smart, plus in 5 years time when its not rotting off it looks a lot better than a tanalise fence.
If you are looking at post and 3 rail it is going to be alot more than £2pm.
Stock fencing the going rate is £2pm upwards, more if hand work.
Post and rail depends on spec completely, square posts etc
