    The good old days?

Got a lot of mates / family worked at tungtone and Harborough rubber... Most of them did all right when made redundant or are living on their pensions.. Not many from my age group or below will be so lucky!

    Anyone keep turkeys

It's been a long time since I've kept poultry but there's something in the back of my mind telling me to be careful mixing chickens and turkeys... i think one carries/ passes on/ is more susceptible to something from the other.. Blackhead disease? I might be wrong but....

    Calf rearing costs..

Can someone explain Arla calves to me? I understand they cant be killed till 8 weeks old but why are they consistently cheaper than other calves? Are they bred different/ poorer? I don't understand why ,with the price of bucket calves/ beef, they are always cheap. I don't buy calves from market...

    Flock Sizes

If i used a fraction of that kit and the time spent using it i wouldn't have anything to do with sheep. People make a lot of hard work and spend far too much money on sheep than is necessary.

Fly tipping and the link with no facilities to dispose of waste

It's not just Hampshire, we have just had the same situation here in my part of Leicestershire. Over 3000 people replied to the consultation about closing the tip in town. The council recently spent millions upgrading a tip a few miles away on a very busy stretch of road, it's never been as...

    Fleece washing

The saying "pi55 poor" comes from when poor people used to collect the families pi55 to sell to the wool mills . If they were so poor they couldn't even afford there own pot they "didn't have a pot to pi55 in!

    Fleece washing

The government should offer some sort of incentive to encourage big firms to produce it and big building firms use it. It would put a baseline price on all types of wool and tick all the environmental credential boxes. Obvious I'd have thought but while they are in bed with the petro chemical...

    Insulted by auctioneer

I took a trailer full of short keep stores a couple of years back that included 8 or 10 long keeps to get them gone. Told the bloke penning them i wanted to pull them out and pen separately, he insisted on doing it and as i wasn't staying i left him to it. Needles to say he didn't bother and...

    Low scanning shearlings

I wouldn't be overly concerned by the amount of singles, you're using breeds that aren't overly prolific in my opinion and shearlings often have less lambs than more mature ewes.. I'd be more concerned by the empties, I'm in a similar position. Might well be late rather than empty but im not...

Another dog or give it up?

Lost my collie the other day, He was the most devoted and loyal dog I've ever known, to a fault almost if that could be possible. It got me thinking i might just sell up. I'm only running 120 ewes and some calves as i work off the farm, and around here the opportunity to scale up is practically...
