When I was a young child we had a 1987 MG Montego 2.0 EFi (the fuel-injected, non-turbo one). It was kept for 10 years (was 18-months-ish old when we got it) and it was never a scrap of trouble. It did get broken into, but it had a fuel cut-off switch hidden away right up behind the dash, so the thieves couldn't get it started, so smashed up all the steering column and for some unknown reason totally bent the steering wheel out of shape for nothing. It was later crashed into whilst parked up, so ended up laid up on the driveway for a while. Then when our then main car failed on us, it was recommissioned and went straight back into daily duties, albeit looking a little past its best. Was eventually part-exchanged on a nearly new MK1 Discovery. It was only valued at £350, but got a deal for £1500 off the Land Rover with it. Then when we went to pick the new vehicle up they sent one of the apprentice mechanics into the nearest town to sort the tax out on him and he took off in the Montego. When he came back he commented on how he couldn't believe how well it drove. A month or so later we were back at the dealer to have a minor warranty niggle sorted on the Discovery and that lad had bought the Montego! That's why I've always wanted one since to restore to its former glory! The MG Maestro Turbo is the ultimate model to have really, but still love the Montego due for nostalgia.
