Don't have a break - keep going with KitKat
I'm sure I read somewhere years ago where someone had experimented and come up with the different thicknesses to cut a Kitkat wrapper to get the right(ish) fuse effect.
If I remember rightly, it was ridiculously thin strips you needed to replace a 3 or 5 amp fuse.

Hello everyone, bought a 200amp parweld inverter welder few weeks back to build my silage pusher project for college and I'm unsure as to what plugs/sockets i need. The welder did not come with a plug and I assume it requires a blue 16a round pin plug not a sqaure 13a one. I'd be running it out in the shed off the domestic mains supply and I'm hoping i wont need to call an electrician to wire a 16a socket? any help would be greatly appreciated!
welder spec: Input voltage 230v
frequency: 50/60Hz
input current: 30A max 13.4eff
output ocv: 78
output load voltage: 20.8-26.4
output current: 20-160A DC
.

Inverter welder don't really draw any current wort talks 13amp plugs be fine 16amp alot safe from stra current point of view and alot longer lasting

My inverter welder from @Welding Supplies Direct works fine off 13 amp.:):)
Being a bit cavalier with electric isn't big or clever - it can quite easily kill you, but then if you are going to fek about with it, your dead from the neck up so you might as well kill the rest of yourself off.
Darwinism rules!!(y)

Must admit, I was surprised at some of the suggestions and even more surprised at some of the members who left those suggestions :woot:
I guess most commented in jest but the sparky stuff isn't to be messed with. (y)

My big oil filled stick welder is run off a 13amp plug with reasonably decent results although it does burn through the fuses on bigger jobs. It also doesn't like being so far from the circuit board you have to use your initiative when setting the dial for different jobs. However I haven't had a loader bracket peel off yet.

I have a kempi inverter welder on a 13 amp plug.

It'll burn 3.2mm rods up to 140 amps all day (literally) and doesn't blow fuses, so you should be fine without the blue 16 amp connection.

For example, we made a 24 foot trailer for the primary school out of an old three tonne tipper chassis, and some 8 inch H beams using the kempi, and nearly 5kg of rods

I’m looking at Kemppi inverters for my first stick welder and I also want to run it on 13amp 3 pin plug. What model/size of machine have you got?

Do you lot still use fuses ?

haven’t seen an electrical fuse in mains supply for years . . .
It’s all circuit breakers now . . .
Our standard mains plugs (BS1363) have a fuse in them to protect the cable between the outlet & the appliance. Most socket outlets will be on either a Ring Final circuit protected by a 32A breaker, or a radial protected by a 16A or 20A breaker which is too high for lower power appliances such as radios, desk lamps & the like which are usually protected by a 3A fuse. I've lost count of the number of melted cables I have come across where a higher rated fuse has been used!

I run a 200 amp gys inverter on 13 amp plug. It will run 4mm rods or 1mm wire full out for short bursts even on a 50m extention lead. But I carry lots a fuses as they pop fair regular. If you keep below 140 amps or just find the limits of fuses it's fine if a bit dull. Do not update fuses it will just melt something else which will be even duller. Trust me!

Is this really all that is needed to use a 16A welder on a standard supply from a consumer unit?

Only if you keep the amps drawn below 13, or you'll just blow the fuse or melt the socket/plug.

If you want to use the full amps available on the welder, you'll need to fit a 16 amp supply properly.
