    Pointless Features On Machines

I quite like the fact there is a knack to them. Means you can let someone else try, they obviously struggle. You turn up, lift them in the middle between your legs and they just slide in. Simple. Its a long day if the person you are working with cant work out how to get them out.

    The good old days?

That’s what I thought, but the guys in the film looked remarkably fresh. Perhaps it is the fact it’s in black and white and they polished up for the occasion. no doubt it was a hard life

    The good old days?

I’m surprised how fit and healthy the guys near retirement age in the film look. The ones I remember from the 80’s were knackered men as much from a life of alcohol and fags as the undoubtably hard work.

Getting lambs to drink ( from a bottle)

Milk taste seems to matter. I found diluting the milk more made a difference. Try using real milk from another ewe until it gets the idea of the bottle. I also dipped the teat in some electrolytes. Not so sure that made a difference but at least I felt I was doing something. certainly not...

    Farming stigma…. Working like “crazy”

You would be in a 48% tax band here in scotland

    Ear tags and pet sheep

They should really have been tagged by whoever gave them to you.

How much do agricultural machinery sales people get paid

I very much doubt that will be the case. Only thing worse than not selling is selling and not getting paid.

Hogs at £200 plus….what price shearling ewes?

Yes. Just checking them every day is a surprising bind

Hogs at £200 plus….what price shearling ewes?

Agree about the profit, but compared to cereals the workload is unbelievable.

    Keeping sheep with chickens

I have sheep on my range but Salmonella is still a major worry for poultry producers and there is a risk of it coming from the sheep. A positive salmonella test will wipe out any profit from sheep forever. The advice to keep 30m from shed seems a fair balance, but there will still be a risk.

Hogs at £200 plus….what price shearling ewes?

Or even 48% here in Scotland Granted that needs a lot of sheep, but maybe not that many wind turbines.

Hogs at £200 plus….what price shearling ewes?

Even 1000 lambs at £50 over expected price is only £50000. It dosent buy you a new tractor let alone change your life.

    Layers or broilers

Not sure about 12 months, but it certainly is a volatile industry.

    Layers or broilers

Hypothetically with top egg performance, a good egg price, cheap feed source family labour money on deposit and a value on the manure, while somehow not paying any tax, possibly, but I certainly wouldn’t budget on it. An outbreak of avian influenza in a young flock without insurance would...

    Concreting and tax relief

What if it’s to upgrade a farm road which has never had concrete/tar?

    Unpaid rent-debt recovery worth it?

That’s a good reminder. These conversations always bring out some dubious suggestions. If you can’t do it legally it’s really not worth dropping to their level.

    Unpaid rent-debt recovery worth it?

I would be very surprised if these houses in the lothians are only worth £444,000. I don’t think you will be buying many properties in Scotland.

    Going rates for farm staff?

If the monkey is on slightly less you have little choice (other than giving up). At least dairies have the opportunity of increasing output. Do the sims with sheep any shepherd has to run so many the only option is to sell

    Going rates for farm staff?

I think that is a fairly generous take home pay, but fair reflection of the cost of employing someone. in April the minimum wage will be £11.44. Which is £29,744 as an absolute minimum. Even without house there is employers NI, training, insurance extra equipment Christmas bonus.
