It's an event that's run for a while now, started as a bike thing but opened up to 4x4's 30yrs or older a few years back - combination of hotels and camping off grid in some seriously remote spots with medical and mechanical support, its not a race (........... officially at least !)

Prep and packing nearly done now - should be quite an adventure

let me know if this is interesting or not, if it is I will share some pics of the prep that's gone into the 2a over the last few weeks and will try update on progress along our route, I might even pack a go pro ! if not I will shut up and just enjoy

Big boys tour, I'm sure it will be fun, seven of us did one round Europe last year visiting some sights that the James bond films were made, camped at night and met up with other cars doing the same, we had to buy a car for less than £800.
We are doing another one this year we are organising ourselves round a few of the war sites in France .
Definitely worth seeing some of your pictures, at when the lr breakdowns you will be able to repair it unlike a modern one

Must have a lot of acres in SFI as the rest of us struggle to even get on the land ….

Be interested to hear how you get on though.

Other than the sfi options that are going in this week (hopefully) we are well up to date with work and I have great people working for me that allows me to do this kind of thing with work still getting done

Always wanted to do a trip like this and life isn't a rehearsal so getting on with it whilst I have health / energy / ability to do such things ........... work / business will be just fine without me I'm sure ............. and they do have phones / internet in Africa apparently, in fact it wouldn't surprise me if the phone signal was better in the Sahara than it is at my house !:D

Done a lot of European tours with both friends and family over the years in cars that wouldn't be appreciated here but never driven to a different continent so this is a first (y)

i know 😜

but i am very aware what an absolutely awful time of it many farmer are having right now so did think twice before posting such a “frivolous” thread - I really do appreciate how lucky I am to do be able to do things like this and maybe sharing the experience on here can bring a bit of African sunshine to others

ok - so some more detail about the 2a

I didn’t build it but it was a project over several years for it’s previous owner in combination with IRB developments

New (marsland chassis) and a 2.2 puma engine and 6 speed box from 2016 Defender 90 with delivery miles than was converted to Ls3 by its owner

Engine and box was mounted to chassis and any brackets welding done then stripped and sent for galvanising. it retains the (pared back) loom from the defender so has ABS, traction control, heated seats and windscreen / mirrors etc and OBD port diagnostics

disc brakes but still on the 2a leaf springs it retained enough of its originality (somehow !) to remain old enough to be mot / tax exempt and is also ulez exempt !

few pictures of the original build

So this fitted the "30 years or older" criteria for Scram yet gives us modern performance levels (it's NOT a race ........ but you know how these things go ! :D ) and (hopefully) much more reliability with so many new parts

Just needed a few mods to make it desert ready which I've been busy with over the last few weeks

First being extra cooling - its currently 29c in Barcelona and Sahara can get to mid 40's so this was essential, intercooler and rad as big as will fit the space. Also got us a bit more power, deleted EGR / DFP etc Hybrid turbo and a map :D - it doesn't weigh a lot so it is pretty rapid !

Shocks it was on were a basic and far to stiff Britpart item so have changed them and the steering damper for OME which are night and day better / built for the outback

no pics of them as not exciting to look at !
