Wood Chip drying in bulk

I have considered this but was put off by someone telling me that the vents in the floor block up very quickly with chip/dirt/debris and it is quite a job to clean them again so the drying floor is effective.
The woodchip you are drying should have had the fines taken out before you dry it this will stop holes clogging up. We have installed biomass for wood chip drying on both existing drying floors and new ones, both work very well. But if you are getting into this market you will need to produce chip upto the best of standards to be able to sell to clients claiming rhi.

We also install biomass boilers all over the country but we can supply most makes of boiler including systems upto 5 mw. We have clients from the Isle of sky to Liverpool and Devon that we are on very good working terms with as we are not just about the fast buck.

If anyone is interested in biomass for drying floors you can contact myself we work nationwide and design and install systems using Froling boilers. We are also now installing biogas CHP which has a very good tariff through RHI and ROC 100kW heat and 50kW power
HAs any of these CHP boilers been fitted in the UK yet and have they rates of rhi and rocks for small CHP

I am in the process of installing three 199kw boilers on my poultry site. In addition to this I am installing a drying floor for grain/woodchip, which will be run from the biomass boilers. I am looking for a heat exchanger (water to air) that has three hydraulically separate circuits. This is so I can run the drying floor from any of the boilers, whilst ensuring that the three boilers remain separate systems, and therefore qualify for the higher RHI tier payments.

You would be better of having them linked now as the sub 200 payment is lower than the sub 1mw payment, or get them re rated at 220kw. Unless of course you have had the RHI done pre July 1!!

It's fine if the boiler is sized to do that such as the tx, but it wouldn't be right to try and say a 199kw is ree rated to a 201kw

Ofgem have already started looking at this sort of activity VERY closely. Its totally wrong and anyone trying to change a boiler from one band to another should be forced to stay as they are or lose the Rhi
You made your bed, which at the time was very cozy, now sleep in it.

They are also looking at farmers who like to keep their tractors warm in the shed at night using biomass, or seem to be drying an awful lot of corn that they don't have, and are taking this type of activity very seriously.
Its just out and out greed.

I record heat meter readings every other day atleast, all kept in a diary with servicing details too, just pre-empting an ofgem inspection full transparency.
poultry farmers dont need to cheat to use the full tarrif anyway.
Ive heard of a few guys getting questions from ofgem about varying quaterly figures, they are though getting in tune with poultry production and different bird placement date across years

Interesting. Especially heating tractor sheds.

I was under the impression that as long as the building was enclosed, any heat used in there, for what ever purpose was eligible?

Is there any specific wording saying what can and can't be heated?

Oh please!
If you think that is an eligible use of heat you will get a shock when ofgem, the police and/or trading standards arrive.
There are apparently 50 open cases at the moment as basically its theft from the public purse.
If your not undertaking this sort of activity then you have nothing to worry about, but I am sure that the authorities watch forums like this.
Heating a tractor shed, enclosed or not is NOT an eligible use of Rhi payments and anyone who wants to do that sure as heck didnt mention it when they filled in their application form.

We've visited sites where the installer (salesman) have installed warm air blowers on the outside wall just to use up heat and get more money, strangely they weren't shown on the schematics sent to ofgem

oh I too have heard stories of shocking wasteful behaviour, as I have always said, with the amount of money being sent out each 1/4, if I was OFGEM I would have teams out there on commission checking boilers are certified and emission Complient and schematics match what was submitted.

For the record my systems are as Complient as they can be, don't need to waste heat to hit tier 1 as need it genuinely anyway, we matched heat needs to system design.

The question I was trying to ask was what have OFGEM stipulated as eligible use? I just don't recall seeing anything saying "workshops can be heated but store rooms cant' for example.

Anyone who buggers about changing schematics and doesn't tell OFGEM will surely get caught out at some point over next 20 years?

Hi farmernick,

I am not sure if you still require help with this but I thought that I would post a reply just in case.

I have 2 suppliers that maybe able to assist you with this. Their contact details can be found on their websites below. They both deal with biomass woodchip drying and are super friendly.

http://nexusenergyuk.com/process-drying
http://www.brendonhill.co.uk/woodfuel.htm

Give them a call and see if they can help you.

Cheers

James

Would be very interested if the nexusenergy (Lenz) type system has approval for RHI as I was told specifically by Ofgem that it did not meet the RHI criteria.
