A spot of ploughing

It is quite a way from my immediate area and as you say there is rain forecast but turfs are already bone dry and the match is the other end of June, you will need rain on the run up to match day to make it plough well, I find little or no pleasure in ploughing bone dry land, Sarn match was dry enough by all accounts and the weather is drier now than then, locally farmers have been taking Westerwold catch crop grass and ploughing it up for maize, where it was subsoiled for Westerwold establishment last autumn ploughing has been acceptable but where it was scratched into the top of stubble ploughing has been difficult, even with heavy modern reversibles

I live and work fairly close by, I know where the place is. I suppose it depends on how much rain we get, we've had a fair bit in the last week or so, but you know what turfs like, saps the moisture out. I don't know which field they'll plough in, I might call him or go and have a nose.

Any idea who will be judging ?

I dont think they have got as far as judges! The contact man knows nothing about ploughing, and cant make a decision,(I will ask so and so!) or it seems make promised return phone calls, having I assume "asked so and so"!

Thanks for the complement! I've beaten him four times now, which takes some doing as he is so consistently good, despite the conditions.

When you are doing 80 odd matches a year you too will be consistent, don't think I am knocking him,, far from it, consistency wins matches, look at Stuart Burden in my class, not unbeatable but it isn't very often he is outside the top 4

Young un's such as yourself and Stuart Lamb are the future of Vintage mounted in our area

Some practice over the weekend. A bit rusty after a long summer I think.

The next bout is dangerous ! I breath a sigh of relief if that goes right but it often ends up a bit of a compromise with the front furrow. It wouldn`t be fun without the pitfalls !

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
