FARMERS staging a protest over falling milk prices have been holding up traffic on the A50 with tractors.

There were around 40 vehicles on the carriageway, after the protest was started from the Sudbury junction.

As a result, there were up to four miles of tailbacks on the A50 westbound back to Foston.

Drivers were also held up on A50 roundabout at Uttoxeter because of another protest coming from Stoke on the eastbound carriageway.

Police were on the scene and attempting to divert traffic.

The protest was over news that dairy co-operative Arla had announced a further cut in the price it pays to members, from 25.8p a litre in March to 23.1p a litre today.

Whilst I'd agree with the sentiments behind this, I'm not sure about the choice of road chosen to protest on. Anyone who knows the A50 between Stoke and the M1, would know that in the week it is probably 75% lorries using it, and on a Friday afternoon maybe 95% working men (and women) just trying to get home! Stoke or Derby on a Saturday might have been a better idea, imo!

Hmm,with the traffic these days it would only take a few tractors to create chaos on a lot of roads.

Problem is managing public relations and avoiding police having the excuse to book you ( as they will be instructed by the powers that be. )

Works in france but not in the UK it seems??

Totally agree, getting the publics back up is not going to help one bit

I'm not averse to inconveniencing the public , but I'm not sure that holding up people who in the main are unlikely to be(in the main, anyway) household purchasing decision makers, or alternatively people who aren't bothered because they're being paid anyway, helps the cause as much as getting in Jo and Joe Public's way, in her/his own time!

Perhaps targeting events where live TV are present may be better bet.

How you get a dairy cow with a banner on a premiership football match or cricket test match I'm not sure?:scratchhead:

Could go viral though.
There are plenty of ways of direct action to get a message across nowadays, can just imagine hundreds of pee'd off drivers sat in their cars at the moment
