All things Dairy

The posts look too shiny, are they new? I reckon you could give @jimmer a run for his money if the concrete was second hand too 🤣
New uprights and new bottom rail. The rest is pre loved. Made the beds fit the shed, so we only needed to lay 2x scrape ways. Should come in at sub 70 quid a bed all in.

My little fluff balls
This year's heifers

Reminds me of me and my cousin doing the calf rearing competition for the young farmers rally years ago. Worked hard halter training washing etc. Got to the rally, may ish time, all the others from down the lowlands of north Wales had their Holsteins all dolled up looking prim and proper, and there's me and my cousin with these two fluff balls still in their winter coats 🤣🤣🤣

when we restarted, milked some beef hiefers and tried a few suckler cows, a couple of limos, were 'unmilkable' and very determined. 2 cows were ok, aa and hfrds were ok, but yield was appalling, low fats/protiens.
now, and wonder how we managed it,

were due to collect the first 6 proper cows, the day F&M closed the country up, couldn't sell beef cattle, no ready cash, and looking like no milk cheque worth having, pretty well finished us off, before we began !

worked on through it, ups and downs were common, first milk collection, 279 litres, from 5 milkings, bought any cheap cows, and moved on.

you collected your first proper milk cows the day f & m closed the country down
Doesn’t make sense ,2007 you restarted milking ,,f & m was in 2001 ??you must of had them for 6 years before you milked them

Doubt you could get the metal work for that now. After gaining our old cow cubicle building for youngstock I want to get even more in cubicles. So much easier than loose housing. Parlour & collecting yard would convert nice when we can sort out another place for a handling system.

another scare 2007, this one the gov experimental establishment leak ? I don't think it was Porton Down, but Hampshire way.

Had the beef cows catalogued for a sale at Shaftsbury, cancelled, bills to pay, nowt to sell, and tiny amount of milk. SCA got them away privately, for less money, but that's life.

Our calculations were out, costed milk in at 19ppl, first milk cheque, £1,050 @21.5ppl. All helped, 4 weeks from decision to milking, a very hectic month !

cut our egyptian clover today, sown 28aug after wheat, dd into stubble, bit variable, rather exposed up there, and you can see where the wind caught it. Estimate 3.5 ton/ac, varies in height from 6ins, to 30ins.

well worth doing, next time we will drill at 5kg/ac, this was a bit light at 4kg, tiny seed, bit out with calibration. If drilled earlier, and a better field, would be a lot better. One surprise, not much volunteer wheat 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Maize next to it, turning nicely, and looking like a massive crop. Reckon there will be an outside heap. Cut 5th today, as well, don't think there's any chance of running out of grub !!!
