im having a trailer build with under slung axles, I want the keep the ground clearance under the springs as high as possible. have a choice of suspension, one with a torque arm and one with out, called a slipper eye. Both rated at the same speed and weight. Any reasons not to use the slipper eye type??

The big advantage for slipper type is the much lower maintenance involved. If not greased regularly, the other type will be wanting a load of bushing done in a few years- although there always seem to be plenty that will buy the men at good money and carry on not greasing 🙈

I have always been happy with the eye and slipper end type , that 100
mm suspension is available with the bigger pins , the central rocker is surprisingly light for its rated capacity and the chinese are not the best at welding , Have you looked at the granning axles and suspension they are comparable on price but maybe not such a large range

Not sure on price as not had any for a while, give granning a call they do good kits and were not expensive ,£1500 used to buy 2 axles and all the running gear , we have some trailers on under slung axles and they have been fine and trouble free

Bailey dropside here with commercial axles and mini super singles and due to axles should have come with suspension with torque arm as in pic 2. Was advised by bailey to go without torque arm type (which is likely superior) because if you get in a soft spot there's a lot more parts low down to drag through the sh*t and hold you back. Been no problem trailer rides fine.

@DrDunc knows a thing or two about suspension…
😱 Wouldn't bogies be good enough?

Slipper leaf transfers more weight from deflected axle to the other. Torque arm therefore better stability when badly loaded or travelling over rough terrain

Slipper spring cheaper, fewer moving parts to wear or damage. Been used on ag trailers for eons. Does the job

Torque arm better ride, better stability, better under heavy braking, doesn't need greased every time you go through a muddy field. Costs more

Not many cars fitted with leaf (any more). Asking me to comment on this sort of stuff takes me right out of my suspension comfort zone! 🫦

It would be coming from distag, made in china. Granning are also made in china. 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Don’t mind paying a bit extra for granning but it gets a bit much when they add £400 carriage as well

About £2800 from granning now. Did you get the ones with the torque arms?
