Are you voting today?

We have a new Mayor of Yorskhire to vote for today

..............and you??

Don't forget your photo ID

East Midlands Mayor (new post) here and PCC.

Former had an Independent candidate alongside the usual parties, plus a Reform candidate campaigning on the "no mayor" platform (which he was applying to win). Valid point, Buxton and Glossop have not much in common with Leicester and Nottingham, but not that desperate to vote for them. Spoilt paper.

Police PCC - pointless so spoilt paper.

I really don't get why people are so against proving they are who they are, it's just a photo ID, hardly a big deal in 2024 and probably one of the easiest ways to prevent voter fraud.
I'm fairly sure those who fought wouldn't have wanted future generations to risk election security by not wanting such a basic system.

I don't vote so it doesn't bother me either way 🤷‍♂️

If you wanted to prevent voter fraud in the UK you'd get rid of postal voting, 'cos that's where the real problem is.

Maybe, I don't know how they do it as I don't vote. Perhaps there isn't much fraud anyway (I know the Donald thinks there was)
Photo ID in 2024 doesn't look like a massive burden to me though 🤷‍♂️

Plenty of postal vote fraud amongst certain ethnic groups in the UK. It's not a recent development though, the first big case of it was over a decade ago (Tower Hamlets mayoral election).

It is if you don’t drive or don’t have a passport.
Is it. I don't know, just had a quick look and there seems to be a few options.
Perhaps it is a drama. How do they know who you are when you turn up to vote?
That's the problem with things today, everyone has an issue with something so nothing much changes.

Tony Blair tried to introduce an ID card but it was shot down by the civil liberties fanatics. Actually it would have been a good idea as it would have solved the problem once and for all. As it is if you don’t drive, don’t have a passport or can’t find an electricity bill with your name on it you have great difficulty getting anybody to take you seriously. Another particularly British muddle which was fine when the policeman and vicar knew who everybody was in Little Snoring but doesn’t work at all in a London borough with a huge turnover of residents from all over the world.

The trouble is, state ID cards are pointless unless everybody has to have one, and then they are likely to become so integral you can't exist without one. And we all know the difficulties of when 'the computer says NO!'.
I'm not sure a happy medium would ever exist so as a society, we are probably better off without them.

We have the worst of all worlds now. Our identity is stored on multiple government systems anyway (for me... NHS, DVLA, gun licence, passport, national insurance, HMRC log in, childcare log in. Think of all the benefits and whatever else) with no integration between them.

It'd also help deter illegal migration and health tourism of you had a proper form of ID to prove right to work and access NHS.

Maybe you should have proof of identity to access any type of benefits?

No longer works in Little Snoring - no policeman, shared vicar, many properties holiday homes.

I object to having to prove who I am just because the government can't control the borders

I think Id cards are an infringement of my civil liberty for the same reason

Surely it's to stop voter fraud. A driving licence will do, I can't see an issue

You have to pay a solicitor to ID you for all sorts of legal; agreements and transactions these days - now that really is pushing civil liberty in my book
