How can I keep badgers out of my maize making a right mess this year .

Electric fence, we used to fence off our maize trial plots when we did them some years ago and it worked a treat. I have customers now who fence the odd field, difficult however with large maize plants right up to the hedge.

Actually a little early for the badgers getting in on it, how far advanced are the cobs?

Badgers usually start to damage maize crops when the cobs begin to lay down starch, as I say it's a bit early as @jade35 says they could be really hungry.

do badgers just pull corner down or get into the whole field ?

We normally loose 2-3 acres they find the most ripe plants

i will go up the road with the wifes camera and take a pic of nigh on 20 rows of maize being slowly ruined by stripeys all the way up the headland

So despite not 'taking out' enough badgers last year, they have reduced the pressure of numbers enough for you to notice a difference. Well that has to be a good result. Makes me feel happier about any future cull in Cornwall as I must admit that up to now I have thought that, because of the numbers in Cornwall, individual farm control of badgers would probably be the best answer.

Spoke to a customer of mine tonight who cut some maize today.























He was looking for a broken water pipe.
