Looking at a 2nt hand tractor but the clock has stopped at 1000 hours the dealer who is half hour away from my house says tractor came of a local farm to him so knows the tractor and its still on its original tyres so he's estimate it has done about 4000hours would you buy a tractor with unknown hours or not?

If the clock only lasts 1000hrs, how reliable is the rest of it going to be?:ROFLMAO:

If the previous owners local, can you ask him some questions about it?

i would go by condition and never trust hours, certainly lower is better.

Buying a clean tractor that showing highish hours is a good indication that whats on the clock is genuine, who would clock a tractor back to 10000 hrs.
I bought a very clean Tm that's supposed to have 11000 hrs on it,but you would be hard pressed to find a tighter one with 6000 hrs on it.
Go by condition ,id always be suspicious of low hours ,when you see how some guys are able to mind them and keep them mint up to mid teens and 20000 hrs.

I took a punt on my first Deutz. I knew they had a reputation for reliability and seven years on I'm still using it pretty much every day and it has now clocked up 7+k hours. On that, my newer but 'older' Deutz is a spring chicken with only 6k hours on the clock!
As has been said and I will echo the same; It all depends on the previous owner. There have been some horrendous posts on this forum moaning that; 'my tractor, that has never seen an oil change, grease or operator skill ,has broken down after five years. I hate that model and they are rubbish:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: Say no more.......
Some models are prone to electrical problems and this should be considered. The pedals, linkages and oil colour should all be looked at closely to give a good indication of what is going on inside. If in doubt I'd pay an expert on the particular make to give a fair appraisal. I would expect this to be the norm when spending over £10k......

How many pony's under the bonnet?

Not as many as it looks 250ish now it's been doctored I'd guess, been just about bang on the weight limit all week and carnt knock the way it performs at all, tis short of a exhaust brake tho if I thought for one minute the head/valves/turbo would stand a exhaust brake I'd knock somthing up to do the job but I don't think the head will stand it:( and I had my quota of mashed valves last year
