Camping,

most of them arent actually, and they all say how good the toilets are
ours have actually commented that they liked the sheep. Had some leave early because there were wasps... But its fine because they've paid and they arent getting the money back. Really dont care if they stay the whole week or not, in some ways its better if they bugger off less strain on our facilities and same cash in the bank!

Most of them have been fine though and enjoyed their stay.

Because of wasps? FFS.

We've been camping multiple times most years since the kids were born. They love it.

True, but I have had a couple kick back about the sheep and cattle in neighbouring fields to my site.

They wont listen to common sense and one lot left after a night when they had booked a week. No idea what they expected as it is clear on my listing its a working farm and there will be sheep/cattle close to the pitches most times of the year......numpties!
This 100%

I think it would be similiar here if Herself, was in a "customer facing position" too much.... ! 🤭

I actually don’t mind meeting and greeting them. Have many regulars who come back time and again and it’s nice having a catch up with them. If an evening it often entails a drink as well 😄😄

And people generally are interested in farming, esp those who have seen Clarksons Farm.

Many years ago, I used to sell a lot of dexter beef to customers from all over, and most of them would have been to the farm, at least the once.
So about every 6 weeks, we would have a "Dexter Day". Coffee and biscuits and a walk around the cattle and some of the farm. It was a great way to talk about farming with people who were genuinely interested, but often had little idea, initially, what we were doing.

Many of the customers became good friends and saw my kids growing up :)

That is called a cess-pit. Just to make sure.
Basically an effluent holding tank.

I'll bow to your superior knowledge of all things sewage. However, knowing what sort of 'materiels' the public (and often their pets) are likely to either be infected with, dosing themselves with/consuming or otherwise flushing down the loo (not to mention the phosphates from washing powder, etc) I wouldn't want that material in my manure heap or ever spread on my land or anywhere near it. Fudge composting it. Get it sucked out and disposed of safely.

You mean actually talk to people 😳
It helps keep the reviews rateing up, bit like they ask you half way through a meal "everything ok", Get asked some stupid things like "do you bring the sheep in every night" "do you keep the sheep for their wool" Then there s the well dressed country chap trespassing, declared "i m a farmer ,i know these things, one of your tups is dead" Ten minutes latter it was grazing, been asleep. BUT got to keep your cool as they knock you up at 8 or 9pm and say "the electrics off!!" neally allways their problem (KEEP COOL THINK OF THE REVIEWS)

Going round to collect the purple portraits of the queen.
Get the money first, some reluctant to pay when leaving, especialy when weather bad, but a good cctv keep them them honest, wife does most of that, a pretty face to look at helps with the men, untill the wife in the car round the corner wonders where the husbands got to

ALWAYS insist on full payment by credit card at booking. That way you get your money even if they are no-shows or leave early. It also gives you leverage in the event of a dispute or if someone has a less than optimal stay (i.e. you can say :'I'm very sorry about the noise/disruption/hangover/family violence that occurred during your stay, I'll refund your fee by X%'.

In the same vein you can also warn anyone causing grief that: 'I am receiving numerous complaints about your party if you persist with this I will be obliged to refund their fees and instead bill you their fees for the night'.

Excellent advice when taking tent and party/family groups, moved on to hard tops only now, so much more peacefull less agro, especially from the Mrs

I wouldn't fudge with composting toilets. Just divert the lot into a septic tank dug into the ground and pay to have it pumped out twice a year or something. Never worth the hassle of anything else.
composting toilets can be a big attraction for some.
accepting they might know sod all about them, and might be 'disappointed'.
think 'glastonbury'.

this is exactly what needs to happen, we just don't get the true facts to the public. Years ago, parents did B&B, some returned every year, for years.

camping/pods/yurts etc, is something we have been thinking about. I think its more about deciding to take the plunge, than actually running it.

Campervans...
daughter and her family are into VW 'old' camper vans, there's quite a following of them.
they found it difficult to book a site early on, all booked up.

the 'big' thing that worries me, is weather, shite summer holidays this year, = more foreign holidays next year ?

Ours all pay when they book. By far the easiest way to do it. Dont pay dont book
My cousin use the ‘Pitchup’ platform.
I believe this is similar to airbnb but focussed on tent/camper-van and caravan bookings.
