Lived in a modern house (then) with this heating. On a winter's day the motor would run for 14hours or more to keep the house warm. Once the motor went off you had a cold house. Seem to remember they had Brooks motors which were constantly breaking down. If you wanted to dry wet clothing you had to put it in front of a vent which meant the rest of the room was cold. Moved to a cottage with a logburner which was more reliable and warmer.

Forced air heating is the most common here. As said it’s quick to warm the house up and can have ac added relatively easy. Much more controlled than a water/ radiator system that’s slow to change. Electric is best. No carbon monoxide or furnace to buy or maintain just heater elements and a fan.

The only heaters of that type I have ever seen are oil fired and the heat exchanger was the weak point, it would crack and then the combustion gasses would pass through the building which was not good. They are normally diesel fired and very inefficient, rip it out but check first of all very carefully for asbestos insulation in it.

I can remember the electrician on one of his frequent visits to the house saying our system was based on a Canadian system, only ours seemed to be having teething troubles. All the houses on the estate had the ducted air system and an electric fire. The electrician said his job was like painting the Forth bridge, by the time he'd gone all round the estate the heating had failed in the first house again. The landlady was always complaining about the electricity bills.

Forced air is standard in most of North America, the centrifugal blower and ductwork is extremely common, the oil heat is much less common, and the gravity oil burner is less common still. I've never seen a forced air gravity oil furnace like that, assuming that can on the left is the gravity thermostatic control, and is connected to an oil pot type burner inside. If it's gravity oil, then it would run on #1 fuel oil, or kerosene and should have a label indicating it. But that is obviously a combustion blower also, again not something I've ever seen. The only gravity oil heaters I've seen are room heaters, without either combustion or hot air distribution blowers.

Typical #2 (diesel) oil burners will have an oil pump and nozzle driven by the combustion air blower, like a Beckett being the most popular brand here.

Where is the oil tank? Maybe outside at a higher level than the burner?
