Ferts bought so have a fair idea of costs.

Still holding 350t of spring barley from this years harvest which I fear was a mistake. Only seems to be going down at the moment.

Should have clapped there hand @285 I think.
Fert is bought here as well. I’ve still a pile of feed barley sitting to sell but in no rush.
its volitile times. There’s going to be swings up and down. Give it time it’ll be fine yet. Everyone gets in a flap when it drops 10-15 but recovers it the next week. USUALLY.

They would only buy against you if you lock it all in before harvest. Leave 30-50% if you are concerned about yield/quality.

Personally I like it rather than leaving 50% spot or the fob element from bairds which means nothing to me as far as when to lock that element in.🤷

Frontier are different after a certain date the futures will be fixed even if you don’t do it.
It’s a 90/10 contract you have too supply 90% at the futures price on a certain date in August

I turned it down 90% is too high they will buy back against you in a bad year
It’s the 3year bit that puts me off. My core barley area goes via our local cooperative, what I put to others is extra from additional area I might not have if short term summer grass rental changed or if grain prices drop significantly I want to be able to increase livestock numbers again. Or maybe put 30 acre out for seed tattie rental. I would chance selling them some at £300 for next harvest if they offered it but after that I don’t want to be tied in to what is effectively unpriced barley production.

Did you get told your they were only offering this to a select few as well???
No word of that, my rep seemed to think he had an unlimited tonnage of it to offer. I think they will have to try pretty hard to get tonnage for Diageo as they were very slow to get grain uplifted. Some of the bigger boys about here were seriously hacked off with them. I was lucky that grain was dry and could sit patiently waiting uplift. A wet harvest and I would have had issue.
