Has anyone managed to make and setup formwork into concrete to leave a drainage channel wth a lip to put a long grating. I have seen it done but cant work out how to approach it.

You want to form something like that?

What kind of dimensions? What shape for the channel?

Is this to be poured in situ or are you making up pre formed sections?

Forming the lip is the easy bit, just a bit of 4x2 or whatever size you want suspended from hangers. The channel would be a bit trickier as you'd have to make sure it didn't rise up when you pour the concrete.

Yes similar to that, it would be done in situ across tracks on the farm that have slopes and are washing away all the time. This would be put in to divert the run off and soak away.

Could you create a shallow sleeping policeman to divert the water without the need for the drain? A drain will block regularly and need more maintenance than good contouring will. Might not work if the slope is too steep or the contours are wrong though

We have done this with angle back to back so it looks like channel. Then welded nuts on the bottom edge of the angle and held it together with bolts. Once you have poured it wind off the bolts which eases the angle and you can remove it without damaging the edge on the concrete. We use this to form ventilation channels in grain stores. Takes lots of setting up.

Fair comment anything that needs to be maintained tends to not be on our farm. I have thought more i could lay a large diameter steel pipe into the concrete using the weight to create a inverted sleeping policeman? Then i only have have to shutter it up as a straight run

We've created some nice gullies around the yard using a shaped former dragged through the concrete as it goes off. They're only about 2 inches deep and about 12 inches wide but on a gentle slope catch and direct water really nicely. I'll take a picture tomorrow if I remember

Get your hands on some metal motorway crash barrier, lay it flat in the road.

They make great surface drains

Here you go; this gully collects yard water, the one below receives it and filters the straw. Under my feet is a 12 inch road manhole type grate which acts as the overflow receiver for the slats if they get bunged up. If you were to concrete in a slab around 2 feet wide with a gully like this in it would that work instead of a hump? It'd be self cleaning with a clear exit and traffic through it on a regular basis. The gully was formed by laying a flat topped slab, letting it go off a bit then using a shaped timber to drag through and create the profile before finishing with a float. Nothing fancy but it works well.
