Unless it’s young grass I can’t see the benefit of spreading fert in the uplands early on. Anytime I’ve had a bit left from putting an early dose on some seeds and spread a couple of strips in another field there’s never been much benefit Especially for the price of it.

That was sort of the conclusion I came to I used to buy AN and put that on around now sometimes it worked sometimes it appeared to make no difference usually after some real downpour’s and snow

We have a load of old parkland grass, where I do most of the outdoor lambing. I've run out of early N fert and not gone back several times, and never seen a difference in colour or grass growth. I don't bother putting any on early now, and it still only grows when it warms up a bit.

Ny grass parks are all rested since mid jan and re decent green colour but not much eating in them. If I dont get something on them soon run out of grass once ewes are set stocked

Ewes are getting up through the gears well now. Some decent lambs coming, the ones out of that Suffolk are coming good sorts

So are ours, should be over 100 today, when your building the pens never think you will fill them all, just been building some more out of pallets.

Aberfield x Cheviot shearling, in for 2. Lambing inside is easy when you just sit on a gate watching them get on with it.
I must admit I do like doing the night shift on my own. Everything nice and quiet after a manic day of being asked questions by everyone, the phone constantly ringing or pinging.

It’ll be delighted to be inside . I was out west at the dentist’s this morning, and drove home through Lanarkshire. The weather was fing awful , and I saw a lot of sorry looking lambs trying to shelter under their mums !

I start at 4 and finish now. Best times are before 8 when the staff come in and after 7 when they have gone home. Not having to give people jobs to do I can get in with feeding lambs and ringing. The night lamber is there but we just get on with our own jobs.

I came in about 8 last night had a look around at 10.30 back up at 2.30 to attend to some cows that had calved and to calve I was back in at 5 went back to bed till 7
I haven’t even started lambing yet. You sound like you are having a fast lambing that’s usually a good lambing here

That’s a fair rate. I reckon we’re motoring when we have 40 ewes lamb a day.

Wouldn’t want anymore than that, had 104 in the 24 hours. Lost a lot of lambs in that time though. I do think there is a toxo problem lerking about as seem to have far to many triplets that never get going enough to drink or one rotten lamb. Aiming for 200% is putting a bit of pressure on myself, my predecessor did 199% and 198% twice.

The straw is 4 year old, been in the back of an outlier farm, we chop it and they eat a hell of a lot.

Yes they always eat what they shouldn’t. Had a few rats in the silage last year too you can blame anything and everything really once you start thinking

I’m not massive worried atm though. Got a good team this year, the staff has been halved and everyone is pulling their weight.
