Had a lamb on a single yesterday, born outdoors the day before. Someone put it on Facebook as looking weak and within 10 minutes there were people offering to come get it or report it. Sent our kid and the students down to pick the outfit up just to get them away from the houses and the girls said there was a woman stood in her garden, arms folded, glaring and shaking her head at them the whole time. I’ve got them to point out the house this morning and as soon as it’s dry enough I’m spreading something seriously offensive behind the houses over there.

The problem is here they don’t ring me they call the estate office, and if that’s evening or weekend it goes to an out of hours person. Last night I had a dead ewe but didn’t have the trailer on so left it until I went round first thing to pick it up as it was going dark and had all the lambs back at the yard to feed, someone saw me and caused a load of trouble about leaving it, well its dead and night time so am I supposed to do. 🤦‍♀️

It wasn’t anything to do with me but the gossip group for the next village over we’re going on about a dead sheep by a footpath somewhere last week. Someone was telling them how if that is still there tomorrow you can get the farmer done for not removing Deadstock quick enough 😡 it’s lambing season ffs! It’s dead, it will remain to be dead if you dropped what you’re doing immediately to go and get it or waited till you’d finished what you were doing and went then. Or while you’re fancying around going for that dead one a ewe gets into difficulty at home and you get back to 2 dead lambs that wouldn’t have been dead if you’d been there… but people just don’t understand or don’t want to understand

Write on there, that it’s not to worry as it’s being built on next year. It gives them something else to gossip about.

Few years back I was having a proper argument with some homeowners about us spreading muck behind the houses on a Friday “you can’t do that, we’re having a BBQ tomorrow afternoon” type of a complaint. I told them then that they’d miss me and the smell of cow muck when they’ve built a housing estate here. “Oh we won’t let them build here, they can’t do that” was the response.

they’re nearly finished building the 140 home estate on that ground now. Wish we’d owned it! Sold 14 acre of our driest ground for just over £7 million

Well that was good sport to watch. I’ve been winding the fifer up relentlessly for days now. Anyway, today she cracked and retaliated. Except she got the target wrong and threw a lump of stinking afterbirth at the other student 😂😂😂😂 so now she’s on major back pedal and trying to get back on Lucy’s good side 😂😂😂 I’m not stirring things up at all though…

Best thing to do is get hold of a piglet , cut his ear tag out and drop him over the garden wall about 2 in the morning . ... I did it once to someone and I have never regretted it !

I went yesterday to Game and Country Gun shop in Selkirk , and think it would be a great venue for a lambing TFF get together . Full of guns & waterproofs ! 😂
Got some more .410 bullets , and a belter of a skinning knife for just £6 .
It’s just about the only shop I feel comfortable in !😂👍
Have you been to Relphs at Yanwath?
I like it in there

I have the same opinion, Neil was always straight with me and said hello even though im a small time farmer. Neil and I went to a farm to see a bull one day and had a good chat in the pickup.

Your thoughts with the new man might not be far away, it comes with the territory a bit, you have to be a big character in auctioneering. Though its a nice touch when an auctioneer is walking through the pens if he even just says good morning how are you. New man doesn't do it..
I note your comments, there is a fine line between being a “big character” and coming across as being a cocky prat. I have never been to Longtown and not been spoken to at some point during the day by Neil Mcleary, from what I have seen he was Old School, he did his best to get a good price for his vendors but never lost sight of the fact that he wouldn’t have a trade without the travelling purchasers.
I have only experienced the new chap on a couple of occasions, one of which he stood in the sheep ring chewing on gum and on another occasion he was selling to a captive audience with an air of arrogance, like taking candy off kids. I remember thinking at the time I would love to buy under him when there were half as many people around the ring and trade was on a downer, that is when a real auctioneer comes in to his own.

Helpful local of the week.
The farmer has replied saying she's been to see the newborn calf and it's doing fine 🤣
