Who (if anyone) is still doing this in the UK ? I looked at it in some detail a few years ago and it made absolute sense (and that was when N was cheap !). logistically it was a nightmare however

Who are the experts on this to speak with ? It should be a no brainer at current N price levels surely ?

Depends if you believe rumours.

I was told it did something pretty drastic to ph levels. But would add just hearsay.

Haven't spoken to him for a long time. I heard he was unwell.

Was going to buy some tyre's off me for his land rover. But never heard from him again

That's the issue with Ammonium Sulphate (used in Cultan), it's highly acidic, and was always said to neutralise it's own weight in lime £££.
Funnily enough I've got about 5kg of ag lime beside me in the office to test that hypothesis, and about 90t of AS in the shed. I just need a pH meter.

I thought the reason it stayed in place was the high concentration of AS sterilised that portion of soil, halting degradation/leaching? Not sure that would happen with Urea?

yes I think you are right but surely injection of any fertiliser is more efficient than broadcast ?

Crops like potatoes placement is common ?

The late great Emsted sent me some German work on it from the 70's/80's looking at the script. Was on here in messages-or a former version!! Not on it now unfortunately. If a moderator chooses to look and can retrieve it, I would be more than happy to share..

Logistics are the killer and very specialised kit-poor workrates. The science is sound, and as mentioned works a little like anhydrous ammonia injection or Didin in that it incapacitates/kills soil bacteria that leads to denitrification-so with that being the new 'thing' I can't imagine the great and the good would be looking at it...

There was a difference however with AS over the 'sterilising' approach, but I cannot for the life of me remember it. Believe it liberates soil phosphate for one thing.
