Cydectin Injection & Footvax

I am injecting my ewes with Cydectin for the first time, but have been told that if they've been Footvaxed then don't inject those because they may react. I have a few that have been Footvaxed, so I'm not doing them, they'll just be wormed as usual.

However, when I inject ewes with Cydectin, then after a period when it's worn off I assume they could be Footvaxed. I actually won't be Footvaxing them myself, but I'm selling some ewes so the new buyer might want to.

Any idea anyone?

Cheers

It is only the 1% injection that killls them i learn't the hard way. I'm sure the newer stronger 2% stuff is ok. BUT whatever you do don't take my word for it, I am only a farmer, not a vet therefore I know nothing!

On the contrary, you know which Cydectin is OK.(y)

Only the 1% causes the 'drop dead' issue, otherwise there would be an awful lot of (extra) dead sheep around the country. A vet told me this week that it was due to it being in a different carrier.

@Clive Tee , the contra-indication is for life. It doesn't seem to wear off.

Just the 1% has the issue. What is your justification to use the product in your ewes?

Because when going for sale it's fairly normal to drench and shower ewes. But I won't shower because the only time I did it, we had an outbreak of red eye. Can't be sure showering was the cause but hell of a coincidence.

Anyhow, don't like the sound of Cydectin injection so not going to use it now. Will just drench as usual and maybe spray Crovect/whatever.

Thanks

@GrannyAching - you can use the Cydectin before using Footvax. Once the animal has been vaccinated with Footvax then it can NEVER have 1% Cydectin.

As long as your ram is not previously vaccinated then it is fine.

That's what I thought. So I could inject my ewes with Cydectin 1% because they have never been Footvaxed (except a few I bought in which I'll just drench). But IF I go ahead, I'll tell any purchaser not to Footvax for a few weeks. Thanks :)

Yes you could.

The purchaser should inject them themselves as part of a quarantine treatment, but I know people often don't do that or do it badly. :(

Thanks @bovine much apreciated clarification.

So if I'm selling him on in 12 or 24 months through a mart (possible) would you not include him in a footvax programme for fear the message didn't get through to the vendor? I suppose I've just got to attach a note to the movement record I leave behind (still on paper here.) What do others do?

The movement paper that you fill in gets sent off by the market. The buyer would get another, issued by the mart, so would never see anything you scribbled on the original.

Not sure what you could do if you have no contact between yourself and the buyer. Perhaps put a note on the pen or in a catalogue (if there is one)?

Thanks for replies.

Don't they publish these things in the sale catalogue? I've seen Enzo/Toxo and Heptavac mentioned.

Catalogue? Maybe in the "breeding" sale. Something to remember but surely this is a potential problem for anyone buying in - or selling, I wouldn't want someone coming back on me after killing my animals.

Is it ok to keep unused Footvax for future use? I've got a fair bit left over so have put it in the fridge for now.
No. Bottle must be used up immediately once opened.

This post will now be followed by a series of replies where people keep bottles open for 3 years and they are fine. Give them 1/10 of the dose, squirt it up their arse etc.

It would be a very silly thing to keep the bottle open. You must throw unused product away. Buy in the smaller pack sizes.

Ok, i thought that was the case. Annoying thing about is the pack sizes are 20ml, 50ml and 250ml. I had 180 or so to do so it was cheapest to buy the biggest pack. Now got to throw some away.

Hey, I've never tried squirting it up their arse. Does it work? It would certainly save giving them a jab of a very painful vaccine...... I shan't mention the other bits, as it'll not do your blood pressure any good.;)
