Decent Brushcutter/Strimmer

I need a new strummer. Been running a Tanaka straight shaft loop handled one for over 20 years but it’s wearing out now.

Been a fantastic machine and hardly ever had a spanner on it. But only 0.63kw do not that powerful.

I’m tempted by another Tanaka machine. Probably a “cow horn” handle style with a bigger engine. Just hope their reliability is still as good as it was when I bought the first one.

What else is worth a look? Budget to say £400 as a guide.

Yes. Current tanaka has various ends. Think I will retire that to hedge cutter end only as it won’t be used too much like that and end up running fir longer on light duties.

Have fallen out of love with Stihl a bit though. Last chain saw was too plasticly and the handle has collapsed in 3 years light use.

Where do you get the Tanaka?

Stick with the Tanaka best strimmer made. I believe they have been bought by Hitachi.................................

Tanaka all the way ! Have 2 X Tanaka strimmers here must be 30 years old and they're unbeatable. Tried a strimmer and hedge trimmer from Shindaiwa but theres no comparison

Now you’re asking!! It was 20 odd years ago!!!

just had a google

Warranty 5 Years

Looks like Tanaka is one of the best kept secrets of the strimmer world, thought I was the only person to have one!

That looks a beast! I had Kawasaki brushcutters in ozzy probably 25 years ago now. Think it was an ED50 that we had. What a beast that was.

I now have Honda bent shaft 4-stoke for around the house/garden and Stihl FS460C for the heavy stuff. Both of which I can’t fault. I am allergic to the Stihl 4-mix engine though, got one on a pole saw. Not really my cuppa.

The 4-stroke Hondas are very refined and smooth, like little sowing machines and always start on the button. However nothing beats the power of a proper big 2-stroke when you need it. The Stihl fills that niche now.

If you want to use your old ends you'll need the same shaft?
We use Ryobi and they have a square shaft, Tanaka might be multi splined shaft, i'm not sure? Ryobi will never be a Stihl or Husky but can cut like a 50cc and are only 25 and 30cc machines. Loop handles and they just love attention ...............

Don't get anything to big or heavy an hour hard going is plenty even with the little light strimmers.

Edit:
I don't think you'll get a 5 year guarantee and a VAT invoice (commercial use), will you?

Just a thought, but have people thought of going electric?
Got sick of of me elbows being knackered howking on a pull start and invested in a battery powered strimmer. Fantastic piece of kit, a 7.5 battery gives approx a hour of heavy duty strimming
And different battery modules can extend that even further.
Not cheap, but then again a quality strimmer isn't either.....and no screaming engine noise and breathing in exhaust emissions.

What did you get?
We have a big old husky, but it lives at Dad's, brilliant but loud. I was thinking about a rechargable one for doing round the edges of my grass and other rough bit in the garden. Would be able to use that when kids are in bed.

It's an EGO, once I realised how good it was I went the whole hog, mower , hedge trimmer , and chain saw-;)
Though, there are now other brands available.

Bought my old man a few years ago a Stihl fs94 (I think it is) very good on heavy going not so good on regular lawn type as it seems to bog down when you blip the throttle. Very good machine tho.

Throw the air filter out just to test ............
If no better a 1/4 turn out on the L (low) jet
If not, 1/4 in again on the L
Always remembering where you started ....
The L and H jets probably have a bit of plastic over them to prevent adjustment, just for emissions "in other countries" ........

Just saying ............
