Drones - an idea

Whilst driving my 8 year old daughter back from her gym class at 8.30 last night we encountered a brightly lit object hovering above the lane. She got rather freaked out and it did not help when I mentioned UFOs. I then realised that it was a drone and a neighbour (who is a GP - so I am not going mad!) said the same.

I was somewhat horrified that this thing could just fly over my property (albeit at night and illegally) but in hindsight what a brilliant idea. Is it had an infra red camera is this not the solution to farm and rural security!?

Could a drone be made to look very sinister and fitted with a loudspeaker. When I see dog-walkers off footpath it could be despatched - like a Stealth fighter- and It could relay my sentiments (via the speakers).

In terms of patrolling above a farmyard in the hours of darkness then its not such a bad idea i guess, potential for the future maybe. The thing that might hold it back currently is the battery life of the machines which im sure is only about an hour before needing a recharge. Perhaps if they could automatically land on a recharging pad and then do shifts one recharge, one patrol. Work well till someone nicked the one recharging on the ground!

I wondered about battery life. It was only up for about 15 minutes. There was not enough time to Google the legalities of shooting a drone and then find the keys to the cabinet!!

When the batteries are sorted-out, and are not potentially nickable on the ground, I can't think of a better security solution!

I've an idea too.

Shoot the bloody lot out the sky unless you have express permission from the landowner below.

Rest assured for everyone thinking they will be good for security there will be some stinking theif who has already had a look over your property with one.

On the rare occasion we get to sit on a sunny Sunday afternoon and enjoy the view from our field, some tosser sparks one of these up and farts about all around the castle ruins.

My old boss was building one that would take off, do a circuit and then land back at the same spot for a recharge

So is it legal to deliberately shoot one down if it is flying over private property without permission?

You wouldn't think about shooting down a glider/microlight/light aircraft would you. Whats with the hostility towards drones? Each of the above could also have cameras or be filming.

The hostility from my part is what right do they have to go viewing beyond my boundary from above? Don't tell me they're flying them just for the fun of it. They fly them to put cameras on them. I know of no other recreational use for them.

If someone jumped over my gate, walked right the way down my field and started taking pictures of my property I would kick his arse back over the gate. Why is he "allowed" to snoop about with a drone?

They should be regulated better. I appreciate that any plane, copter or microlight could do the same, but they are usually much higher, not hovering for ages and are for business or recreation for the sake of flying, not for being bloody nosey.

I have no problem with anyone flying them just over their own property for their own use or gain.

fix a release mechanism to your drone, fix an empty chemical can to it, hover it over your neighbours yard/can pile and release.

Voila chem cans disposed of

The wingspan is 35 feet with a rotary Wankel engine, with seemingly no exhaust. It sounds like a demented lawnmower and the engine note goes up and down as they practice, and drills holes in your brain. They film anything and everything - there must be miles of me getting stuck, chasing pigs etc.
Not a lot of point in trying to take it down with a shot, as they would have you on film, and their public liability insurance is less than mine.
