Farming after knee surgery

Being careful is important, but you must keep it moving or it will seize up, I went to see the physio a week after and she gave me a bollocking because I was limping, she made me get on a tread mill and walk as fast as I could to make me use both legs the same, its twisting that causes problems and carrying weight

Keyhole leaves such a tiny mark that it's worth remembering that what went on inside was major. If it was a huge vivid scar maybe we would rest a bit more!
Was given the pics by the consultant, they are amazing, so clear and no blood at all, the bit they cut out was as big as my thumb,

In the New Year I'm off for x ray & MRI scan on my knees. According to doctor either cartlidge damage or damage from artritus, key hole for the former, wait a while if the latter then knee repacement surgery.

How many of you have had knee work done? was it a sucess & how much time did you have off work?
A friend had both her knee joints replaced with about a 4 month space in operations, took 6 months to get rid of the pain which painkillers struggled to control but all is good now, she was 50 when the op's were done and they were reluctant to operate as apparently they only last about 15 years.

Very relevent post. Doctor seems to think veg harvesting & been persistant has done my left knee a lot of good.

I've had trouble with the left knee on & off for 22 years. But 6 years ago left knee packed up so had loads of tests & it was gout. Got the medication & with lots of pain killers carried on working, Doctor said I would always have a limp. But after 6 months the pain was much less but any little knock or kneeling put me back to square one for a week or perhaps a month. But by January last year apart from kneeling the left knee is now cured, but ate some Strawberries late October & done the flipping right knee now. Can get about but nothing to kneel on which will be a damn nuisance at lambing time.

Woman do seem much more prone to osteo artritus than Men, I know 2 woman with new hips by the time they were 52, both think they will be lucky to live another 15 years. In fact know an ex swimmer, competed in student games when she was young, new knees at 24 & that was 15 years ago, bit worrying for her because she really does work hard.

I had an arthroscopy to sort out a footballing injury, they trimmed the damaged cartilage and removed the broken ACL:(

The cartilage bit is fine, but the missing ligament gives lots of trouble, knee going out and excruciating pain getting it back in, no amount of exercise seems to keep it good and sheep absolutely knacker it when they push and shove against it in a pen. I haven't been able to kneel on it for 20 years so all my trousers are worn out on one knee only.

The trick is only do it if you really have to or it could be made worse.

Had arthroscopy(keyhole) several times, ok for about 18 mths, then had both mine replaced, 2005 and 6, was 52 and 53 y/old. Driving combine/light work after 8 weeks.

Had about a year thinking was it all worth it, then went from strength to strength, now, not felt so good for 30 years.

Single handed arable farmer, 300 acre, so don't carry any great weights anymore , and walking on top of corn heap (sample) seems to be the worst I do.

Avoid kneeling but told I could if on cushion etc. But walking over plough etc. When working or shooting no problem.

Would I have it done again? Bet your life I would!

I got bad knees that make noises when i go upstairs and somtimes ache a bit and im aware of it but not in pain.probably as a result from years of moto x and enduro riding, jumping of machines etc.now i use carpet to kneel on when i bend down in my workshop and recently started using knee pads from screwfix.these are inexpensive and brilliant but straps cut into back of legs if i walk far.worth a try in my opinion.just a reminder we getting old

Lack of dairy in the diet when children butter , milk and proper cheese , just how many kids only eat margarine and low fat spreads ? all this modern health living not sure its all its cracked up to be . women then have children which depletes what they then have .

Trousers with knee pad pockets are good. Lumps of cubicle mat are excellent on the workshop floor.
Father (80) has 2 new knees and one new hip, moves better than he did when he was 50. I got up from in front on the fire on Christmas day and everyone heard the click from my knee, probably go for both doing before I'm 50.

Have had serious knee problems since a teenager ,mostly self inflicted from playing rugby.Currently have had about 6 key holes on the left knee to trim and clean up damaged cartilage.Right knee has had 2 major operations and 8/10 key holes. The one main operation was to remove some of the kneep cap that was broken fighting with a cricket bat at school(we were arguing over who was going to bat next in a lunctime school yard game).I think i must of lost ! The other main operation was a Gortex ACL replacement back in 1984 when it was a fairly crude operation compared to today's.
Today i'm under one of the leading surgeon's at the national Orthopaedic centre in Oswestry.Had keyhole on both knees about 10 months ago and he told me that on the right knee the Gortex ACL replacement has broken, there is no cartilage left and the knee is 85 % arthritic. He suggested a knee replacement but to delay it as long as possible being i'm only 54 and to keep exercising to maintain the muscle around the knee.I have purchased a exercise bike and use it 3/4 times a week which has been incredibly good at building the muscle up.The Consultant is astonished that i can walk without a limp (can even run a little) and i aim to go as long as possible before the inevitable.
On aside note my mother has had 2 knee,2 hip and 2 shoulder replacements and can still waddle about the place barking out orders. She is 80 and had the first hip 26 years ago so there is hope for us all !
Ps sorry for all the waffle.

I hope your problem is cartilage,if you need replacement knee joints a lot of sheep work will be a no no,not meant to kneel on em,no shearing, docking etc, sheep are knee level, probably what caused your problem in the first place?

Had left knee cartilage trimmed via keyhole circa 3 rys ago, when I came around after it, such a relief as no pain.
I shouldn't have worked but was ploughing the following day with no ill effects. Only notice a tinge when the weather is cold sometimes.

I think gout crystals caused my problems.

Been butted by sheep, kneeling when drystone walling & getting wet & cold working in caulie & swede fields may have aggravated it plus the 12,000 small bales I stack a year.

I can cope with some pain & a limp but not been able to kneel is really annoying.
