Ford New holland 7740 vs Jd 6100

Looking for input from experienced operators of both. This is not a green vs blue debate it's just I need a genuine comparison.

I currently own a John deere 6100 tractor which completes a wide range of general tasks on the farm and a fair bit of road haulage with around 9 ton which it does fine.

I need a second tractor to work along side it and have found a late blue roof ford n/h 7740 sle but I cautious as to how it would match up against the JD 6100? In terms of reliability and pulling power?

Any opinions much appreciated

I've driven a JD6300 a fair bit and would say the 7740 would be more than a fair match for one of those. Therefore I would reckon it would show a 6100 a clean pair of heels very easily.

However as a ford/NH person I think the 7740 is somewhat overrated and given a choice would get a 7840 every time if one was available.

My 7740sle has touchwood been pretty good for me and the previous owner. Has 9000hrs+ on. Not driven an 6100 only 6 cylinder 6000 series but its got to have more go at 95hp than an 80hp JD???? Does a 6100 have a turbo?

I like my John deeres but I would of thought the 7740 would more than match a 61 to be honest a 6400 is a closer match

24 years ago we had a 6300 power quad, neighbour had a 7740sl. 7740 was a far better pulling machine yes 5hp more but equipped with Trelleborg Twins it drilled 1000 acres for 2 or 3 seasons with a Vaderstad 300c (Now everyone who has them uses 150hp minimum) always thought they were under estimated. Spend a bit of time in a blue roof 7740SL now and would prefer the Deere simply due to the lack of a proper shuttle and after 12k hrs the gear linkages are knackered and the 4wd disengages in reverse motor still good and doesn't smoke. It's has had a hard life on a loader.

The 6300 was sold in 2003 looking very tired with 6k hrs mostly of arable work. got £7200 for it. The rear cross shaft was worn out and wings were rusted through (road salt) It used to bounce like a kangaroo at 40k 7740 is slightly slower but doesn't bounce.

Cheers BB

I'd say the 7740 will ougun a 6100, simply because its 100hp vs 75 hp. However, a later ten series with the 4.5l power tech will have the blue models pants down. The 6300 had the 3.9 l engine same as a 2850, that's why they were w4nk. My 6310 is 100hp and has plenty of guts, 4.5l power tech, cab is very comfortable and power quad is the best IMO, having spent long hours in a ford 8340 sle, I'd say the power quad is leagues ahead.

A good 7740 is a very useful tool, and should be streets ahead of a 6100. Make sure the forward reverse synchros are not noisy and you should be onto a winner.

Im not sure on the 7740 trans is anything compared to a powerquad and the shuttle and as brynseiri stated the 6010s are a different league again.

What are the front diffs/kingpins/final drives like with loaders etc on the ford?. Not much issues on the JD. I guess thats the sort of stuff that needs considering if a loader is also part of the plan. Not just the trans. Hydraulic power?????... So flow etc. Gear pump VS axial piston.
