Rye grass and not blackgrass thankfully, but 2024 is certainly not a year where its easy to take a lot of pride in a farm


Is it just me or are others finding similar ?

Get a seed destructor for combine, or chaff cart, or tag a big sqaure baler onto ar*e of combine like the do in west oz.

And shares in exxon mobile for diesel.

Residuals certainly ran out here on earlier drilled stuff and where we used atlantis star it has stunted the BG (and wheat) but not killed much. Glad i didn't do more. Disappointed tbh as we tend to rely on residuals so on odd occasions have used monolith or something previously it has worked quite well.

Don’t be thankful that it’s ryegrass! It’s much more aggressive and harder to tackle than blackgrass.

Ryegrass is much worse than blackgrass. I would spray out those areas before they seed. Good luck!

Having seen neighbours battle resistant ryegrass I would take zero tolerance and spray out any patches where possible. It’s the only thing that makes me feel better about having black grass!

Slightly concerned now. A fair bit of AB15 due to come out this autumn. The original mix included ryegrass, and the seed return will be high, but I really don’t want to top it, as it is full of wildlife (roe fawn seen this morning, leverets, and a good population of greys. No other ryegrass problems on the farm (plenty of BG). The AB15 mix no longer includes RG, perhaps for this reason.

You’re not using herbicides in the AB15 to build up resistance though so not quite the same - just make sure it’s all completely dead with round up when spraying out and preferably get a chit on it and do the same again before sowing wheat. We’ve had wheat following AB15 and managed to control the ryegrass volunteers fine.

Thank you. Was intending a wheat crop to clean up the other rubbish, and then look at options of going back into a scheme. It’s some thin old ground, and one bit is in front of my house, and it’s magical watching the barn owls, kestrels, etc etc. Will need to be hot on not spreading it about on cultivators etc

You can do legume only ab15 now if you want.

I've just bought a plough. We are the cleanest we have been for bg for ages due to ploughing 40% of the acreage last autumn. Costs too much not to.

I will have no horse muck on the arable fields due to grass issues (rye brome in my case). As above I will have no grasses in non cash crop mixes, unless long term environment plots.

Combine and contract balers are the biggest sources of infestation or spreading infestation.

I will always do a decent sterile strip around the edge of every field to stop combine spreading weed seeds into the field. We also knapsack around every in-field obstacle to prevent issues (including combine driver (me) getting too close to get every last ear and denting header guard)

Indeed. I didn’t rotate it around the farm, and re-established it with just the legume mix (not an option first time), but despite a clean start, the original seed return has come back with a vengeance on this piece, the other 2 blocks not so much.

The avedex/ generic liberator did a wonderful job on our black grass last autumn, unfortunately it also did a great job on most of the corn, upto two weeks ago we had almost bare fields, they are now greening up by the day including one field that we drilled some two year old spring wheat in to get rid of it, the simtech has woken enormous amounts of bg, so glad I didn't waste money on spring seed as it would be swamped by end of may, I think the wet weather through the winter may have been a blessing in disguise allowing us to kill a lot of bg this summer, going against my instincts but going to run the drill through it every month to keep it germinating and topping before viable seed drop.

My mates Simtech is a blackgrass seed tickler because it is a shallow mini cultivator
