Greenhouse space to let

I’m building a new greenhouse and felt that for those of you that don’t want to to build your own greenhouses I would offer space in it so we can all be stronger together with a shared greenhouse vs having our own. A "co-operative" kind of thing because cooperation is good right ?

The produce will be "marketed" not just sold (although don't ask me what the difference is please !), I will employ the same people we all normaly sell tomatoes to for this so there will be additional cost to cover but obviously anything grown in this greenhouse will be worth more because it’s being "marketed" and not sold

The deal is you pay me an upfront fee per square ft which reflects the cost of building the most expensive greenhouse money can buy plus the cost of my team of greenhouse building consultants to design and manage that project . I'm going to build this greenhouse on someone else’s land and pay them a rent ( but I can't see that being a problem in the future ?) You will be able to claim the same tax advantages that you could if you simply built your own greenhouse so clearly its very tax efficient........... this alone is a reason its a no brainer for anyone needing greenhouse space

I will charge you an annual fee to cover management and staffing costs. I will be paying myself as much as I can get away with and my staff will be equally well paid, we will all probably be earning more than any farm worker or manager because we are smart and are running a greenhouse.

This annual fee will of course be more than you can rent greenhouse space for from comercial greenhouse owners but our greenhouse is "better" because we can blend your tomatoes and "market" them meaning you will get the same price for them as any other tomato grower does

You can sell your space whenever you wish but it won’t be tax free like the space I will always have for sale in the new greenhouses I will build for anyone who asks. Your money is safe, it’s like a kind of pension scheme for people who plan to never retire making it the ideal investment for a farmer

Finally we are going to invest some more money (that you will give me) in a machine that can tell the difference between a red tomato and a green one - the market (well one or two very picky customers) tells us they only want red tomatoes so we must supply them, this amazing technology costs just £250k and will sort up to a dozen green tomatoes a day creating at least £4.99 of added value to what we market - the pay back is only a few decades. We will have cleaners that allow us to clean beyond the levels that customers demand so we can sell the cleanings to AD plants for less than their value as part of the product we sell at the full price

Hopefully we will get a grant as well as the EU and our Government like to encourage cooperation, if we make this big enough we will not need any merchants and will surely control the market in the future ? Will will be market giants compared to those global nobodies like Cargil and ADM etc

Finally a disclaimer. Although I think i'm an expert at running a greenhouse and I think my calculator works fine and the people we are paying to 'market" for us also tell us they are the best I must warn you that in the surely implausible situation that it goes wrong you may not be able to get your tomatoes out of the greenhouse and the green house might end up being sold for a fraction of what you paid.

whose in ? I can set up a Nigerian bank account later for you all to deposit your buy ins to ? @warksfarmer and @Grain Buyer have already sent me their money although @Grain Buyer did insist that in exchange for his buy in he got the "marketing" contract if that's ok with everyone ?

Picture added of our state of the art site and construction scheme for attention and added credibility :)

Fancy brochures / business plans also in print as I type (all of which you will be paying for !)

Clive you forgot to mention my "marketing fee" of 5%. For this I will come to two of your shareholder meeting, obviously you'll have to pay my expenses. I'll wear my brightest sh*t eating grin, shake everyone warmly by the hand like a long lost pal and tell you all what a great year we've just had. As far as marketing goes, I'll endeavour to sell a proportion of your tomatoes when ever my pal from the green grocer calls, or when I'm quiet and looking for something to do.

Hope you have planning permission for that as with all that blockwork you might find it a tad difficult to argue its a temporary structure.

Full planning and listed building consent - being a co-op project is a big tick in the planning box so was easy to get

If it ever goes bust (surely not) I can buy it from the administrators very cheap and maybe get planning to convert the redundant brown field site into residential

Hi Clive
Great idea I’m in !
I’ll send you the seeds (not tomato)you grow the plants and I’ll get someone to pick up the produce when it’s ready
If the drug squad show up they are all yours!!

No problem - remember it’s your crop at all times and I will make sure the paper work reflects my desire to take no responsibility for anything but make sure all risk is yours.

Please note when I say at all times I’m obviously not including any situation that might involve bankcrupcy of the greenhouse where frankly all bets are off because it’s out of my hands !

Remember the success of your “marketing” tender may depend heavily on how many days shooting you invite me to this season !

Your groundwork suggests that you are setting up a bit of a tinpot organisation. If I was to invest in the scheme I would want a setup that was able to handle a wide range of vegetables, not just tomatoes, and have a volume of crop to enable the employnent of a professional marketing manager that was able to advise and achieve the best returns, not someone that fits it in around his more time consuming business commitments. It would also be important that the maintenance and cleaning of the infrastructure was carried out by people that wanted to be there, as opposed to staff that had been sent in with a broom because it was to wet to do field work.

What if I send you semi ripe, orange tomatoes can your fancy machine blend them away with some other folks red tomatoes to improve my marketability?

Can you handle chilli growing?

C B

Yes I can do anything. All of which obioulsly will become reflected in higher annual fees of course

I just hope the growers of the top quality tomatoes I’m going to blend yours with don’t mind or work out there is no point growing quality themselves if the magic greenhouse can sort that out

I think the fair way forward might be to pay growers based on what quality you grow ...... just like when you sell stuff via any other method really.
