Highlanders/Galloways

I totally agree on Herefords, Sussex and other breeds but ultimately the manager of the hotel has settled on Highlands or Galloways in his mind so I’m not sure that can be budged!

I’d personally go for the Galloways I think because of the horns issue. Also sourcing and subsequent transport. Much as I fancy a trip to Oban I dread to think what haulage would cost from there for a dozen cattle!

Nowt wrong with a good Highland, that cannot be sorted with a cheesewire.....

Longhorns the same. Horns have no place in modern cattle IMO.

Well your cattle are a supremely handsome mob.

As I mentioned in the past, my daughter was already to load up the trailer and head South to Suffolk for a load, but I pointed out she lives and works in London, and who was paying for them!!

OOI, do you Show anywhere? Suffolk show?

I won the Supreme Any Other Native with a Riggit Bull at Royal Norfolk in 2019 and did well with some heifers

Don’t show that much as the time locked in to these sites is a lot and I also worry about health risks

Always happy to show folks around . If your Daughter fancies a trip out of London the cattle on various no public access reserves on the Wast coast would be a super day out

Ironically a lot of these people own a big house

Check the arms under the sleeves of Highland breeders bruised AF from getting poked by horns. I know several and they say the cattle know exactly where the tips of the horns are.
Also no native to your patch so a bit insulting to the local native breeds.

You might be eating your words if the rewilding lunatics get their way. Horns might come in handy for seeing off a lynx or wolf!

Belts more so than Riggits (I happen to know the hon sec is a hard bitten hill man, and tells the smallholders off roundly when they keep wrong'uns)

I would say, looking in, that longhorns went full circle in my lifetime.
They had almost disappeared when I was a lad, and what was left was outstanding. some very good productive cattle.
Then they got popular with the rare breed sorts, and the quality went down the toilet.
seemingly, they've clawed a lot of it back now, and are looking good when I see em.

Lost a lamb who got close to a Highland Cow who waved it's head, and opened it to the guts. Had to shoot the lamb.

Horns were off the following week.

But only the black Highlander is native to Scotland.

The red Highlander isn't native - it resulted from a French Import.

I was always told originals were either black or brindle - not sure if that is correct

Although if the import had been a Limousin cross, the current red Highlanders would be far better

How lovely and you don't see many about. I've several beltie breeding friends who like Duns, I always fear having any as I've red genetics in my herd(s) and there's a risk of washed out apricot offspring
