honda gsx 200 engine

was using the above engine today on a jetter and it cut out after about 10 mins , refused to start so gave up . have fitted new plug and now the engine starts when cold but not when hot , let it sit 10mins and it will start. have checked the carb and fuel tank for dirt . nice blue spark when turning over with the plug out . any ideas ?

Difficult to say for sure, these things can be tricky little sods to diagnose.
Could be coil but I've also seen fuel/carb problems give symptoms that you'd swear were electrical.
1. Run it till it cuts out and won't start.
2. Take off the air filter and squirt a bit of carb cleaner or easy start into the carb and quickly try and start it. If it tries to start or runs for a second on the carb cleaner then spark is good and problem is fuel.
If it still wont attempt to go check to see if the plug is wet after a few attempts to start it. If it is..... Coil..... Probably.

keep thinking its coil myself , was a poor yellow spark until I changed plug , have had the bowel of carb off , jet out and every thing is clean. would put on a new coil for the cost of them , but these things always happen at week ends . just frustrating as the sheep were in and half an hour and they would have been dipped

does it have a low oil level cut out switch? had this prob many moons ago with a beam screeder, topped up oil and bob's your uncle.

Had one like this on a 2" pacer pump, my problem was exhaust valve sticking open when hot, also had some with same fault as @2wheels said.

well I changed the coil and bye passed the oil safety switch still the same. not quite running 100% and has to be left a 10 mins before restarting . will nip it down to the local guy as he sitting with spares if need be . in a hurry for it now. will let you know of the out come.

Don't assume a new spark plug is ok. Got fooled by that on a chainsaw once. Same symptoms.

We had an older one that had ignition points under the flywheel and only sparked when cold because the points were almost closed. I think this one from the diagram has full electronic ignition?
If so, check the valve clearance, one (probably exhaust) might be going tight, holding the valve open when hot. If you pull off the top rocker cover and take the piston to the top (spark plug out) if both valves are not moving, check for clearance on the rocker to valve (just above the spring) you should have about 0.5mm to 1mm. If you have the piston at the top and both valves are moving, rotate it one more time, until the piston comes back up to the top.
