Horsch Airseeder Strip Till

Hello together,

after reading for some i open my first thread now!

As said above, reading here and in the BFF i found an interesseting modification of an airseeder, which is to use the solo coulters for fert and seed osr with a small seed seeder before or behind the packer wheels.
It seem to be something like a strip till thing, e.g. the cousins osr seeder or something similar.
Has anybody actually seen crops or a machine that was done this way?

This was taken back in November, drill in early September @ 40 seeds/m2, crop is now filled the gaps. placing liquid fert down a modified Solo coulter seed is dribbled behind each one./ Drilled with a sprinter 12 Horsch liquid and seed.

Hello Tom,

looks good, thought more straw would be placed out of the seed row.
do you think it would work with the co tines too? The stone release is a lot more unstable on the older machines.
You have modified the solo coulter for liquid fert?
Thanks a lot!

It's into chopped wheat straw, you don't get a brown line like proper strip til machines but equally I want it to be low disturbance to keep my Black grass seed on top. Most of the straw is pushed out the way its just the chaff seems to flow and float around the shank. The CO would be okay as long as its not too hard. We pull the tine at around 15-20cm deep and at around 12kph. Mine are from Horsch and we have played about with different ideas. First picture is the Solo with liquid. we lift the liquid pipe up so that its just below the surface around the bolt hole. The red Knife is what we used two seasons ago but to be honest it wasn't right. The fert was too low and the pipe use to wear out and block up. I also think its nearly too low disturbance as in the wet on my heavy clay soils it would make a slot. The finial picture is an idea with a soiled fertiliser knife and a very crude seed placement coulter on a stiff pipe.

I converted our co from the duett to a Canadian opener for the spring of last year, were using a 2.5" opener with a leading point of 3/8" below seeding depth also applying liquid fert.

We drilled all spring crops with these openers (most DD) with pleasing results, seed placement and germination a lot better than the duett opener, again autumn gone we have used this opener also applying fet drilling O-S-R and cereals.

The only thing was I found that I was restricted to 8kh because of soil through so for this spring I am going to put leveling discs on each leg so hopefully I'll get about 10kh which I will be happy with.

The Canadian openers are from Dutch Industries.

Generally I am pleased with them and as I said we are going to be using them this spring this time with the introduction of the leveling disc, I have added these to the drill for three reasons one to possibly gain a little more output, so the soil throw is not so much of an issue and in turn will leave the field leveler , we also found that we were drilling deeper than I would like to get seed cover so hopefully the discs will help this.

I know the co is not without its problems mainly not having a independent coulter control which is far from ideal but no drill is perfect, and I don't feel there is a drill in the market place at the moment for us .

So I'll make do and mend for the moment with out spending a lot on something new and shiny that may be no better than I all ready have !!!!!!!

For anyone that is interested, we supply all Dutch Industry components here at Sumo for many makes of tine drill including coulters, liquid or granular fertiliser applicators and edge-on conversion adaptors.
We only use the best components on our own machines, and Dutch provide the best performing, hardest wearing and toughest coulters on the market.
Give me or the office a bell for more information, we'll be happy to help.
Cheers, Marv.

Check out Martin Lishman range of points ,we converted our CO with the knock on adapter and now have a wide choice and quick change, we have had very good results using their bean knife drilling rape direct into stubble and drilling beans direct for cover cropping then changing to a narrow sweep for wheat on cultivated land and the sweep for spring barley direct.
