Boris Johnson has totally discredited and made a mockery the UK on the world stage and non more so than his blatant cronyism in filling the House of Lords with his friends and relatives no matter how inadequate and inexperienced they may be for such a position. Isn't it about time this important institution is seriously reformed and all these useless flunkeys removed?

The Hatsoff manifesto...

House of Lords should be made of a selection of people nominated for 10 years from the Royal Institutions and professional bodies (medicine, engineers etc), the military, churches, political parties etc. Then a tenth should be made up from a jury/citizens assembly for the general public on a 2 year term.

Total size around 300.

Any party political affiliation would need to be aligned with the national vote.

Current rules regarding supremecy of the Commons can remain.

Good start point.

How about no political party affiliation?

The house of Lords has been a scandal for over a century, Lloyd George selling peerages in 1922, then we had Harold Wilsons lavender list in the 1970's, Blair handing out peerages in exchange for interest free loans, Boris awarding them to his chums.

at least the hereditaries who Blair was so keen to get rid of didn't owe an allegiance to any present day politician and could exercise independent thought.

Then we have approx 25 Church of England bishops reperesenting their now tiny congregation but no representation for any other religion.

What do we even need it for ? best get rid of the lot of them and turn it into a museum

We still should have an upper house to try and have checks and balances on the commons.
@HatsOff template for change would be a start. There are good people out there from all walks of life, every creed and colour. We just need to find a way of getting them into the upper house without having more bloody elections.

But they need to be people who aren't part of the existing cesspit of people with their snouts in the trough
