Hughes war on plastic BBC1

Making a programme about single use plastics then spend most of the programme talking about water bottles which are 100% recycle able.
They might be recyclable but i think it's right they brought it up, because if we are just shipping all this waste abroad, it's still a big problem albeit elsewhere, recycling isn't the answer to this problem, not making it in the first place seems the sensible thing to do !

Silage wrap is one of the worst things we produce, have thought about making hat to get rid of its use, but in this climate I have no real alternative. When some clever clogs come up with biodegradable (that allows me to keep silage for 2 years) I will be one of the first to switch over. I hate the sight of plastic in any form and pick up any that I see around here, even stop the tractor mid job to pick it up. I often come home with the foot well full of litter!

Plastic never goes away ! That's the biggest problem

We make plastic bottles in work, they don’t go out as a bottle they go out as a preform shaped ready to blow into a bottle.
We are currently making 5.5 billion units a year.
Almost all are made with 50% recycled plastic now, next step will be 75%, but getting hold of enough recycled material is the problem.

Why do they except in those Countries in the First place?
Money.
No good say "oh look there is so and so supermarket carrying bag" .
How do they know where it is going to end up.
They all want milk back in glass bottles ,yes ok but as local direct dairy says ,increase in price, extra weight, vehicle ,fuel use etc.and then goes against their easy sell and forget and green image if they got to collect used bottles and all the heat to boil and sterlise them again.

But what happens to all this plastic when it eventually breaks down into microscopic particles ? Which it most certainly will given enough time, there is already serious problems with microscopic plastic pollution in our oceans, i'm not saying plastic use is going to slow down or even stop anytime soon, but surely we need to at least try to do our bit, by not using it if there is an alternative

I agree it needs addressing, but this issue of these plastic islands in the sea are only due to this place paying China to take our waste plastic away and them dumping it in the sea.

Of the total world plastic pollution I think Europe is only responsible for 2% of it.

It'll have to come a time when you have your own milk jug or churn which you clean at home and refill. The milkman can go round with an IBC and you top up your jug the amount you require.
